The Santillian Triplets #3

The Belle and the Beard

Rate this book
Jasper-Anne Cleary’s guide to salvaging your life when you find yourself publicly humiliated, out of work, and unemployable at 35—not to mention newly single:

1. Run away. Seriously, there’s no shame in disappearing. Go to that rustic old cottage your aunt left you. Look out for the colony of bats and the leaky roof. Oh, and the barrel-chested neighbor with shoulders like the broad side of a barn. Definitely look out for him.

2. Stop wallowing and stay busy. It doesn’t matter whether you know how to bake or fix things around the house. Do it anyway. Dust off your southern hospitality and feed that burly, bearded neighbor some pecan pie.

3. Meet new people. Chat up the grumpy man-bear, pretend to be his girlfriend when his mother puts you two on the spot, agree to go as his date to a big family party. Don’t worry—it’s only temporary.

4. Cry it out. Screwing up your life entitles you to wine, broody-moody music, and uninterrupted sobbing.

5. Get over it all by getting under someone. Count on your fake boyfriend to deliver some very real action between the sheets.

6. Move on. The disappearing act, the cottage, the faux beau—none of it can last forever.

Linden Santillian’s guide to surviving the invasion when a hell-in-heels campaign strategist moves in next door:

1. Do not engage. There is no good reason you should chop her wood, haul her boxes, or pick her apples.

2. Do not accept gifts, especially not the homemade ones. Disconnect the doorbell, toss your phone over a bridge, hide in the basement if you must, but do not eat her pie.

3. Do not introduce her to your friends and family. They’ll favor her over you and never let you forget it.

4. Do not intervene when she’s crying on the back porch. Ignore every desire to fix the entire world for her. By no means should you take her into your arms and memorize her peach-sweet curves.

5. Do not take her to bed, even if it’s just to get her out of your system.

6. Do not, under any circumstances, fall in love with her.

Warning: This hot, modern take on Beauty and the Beast includes a meet-burglary, an immortal cat, a biohazard of a banana bread, a meddling mother, fancy toast, and a temporary fling that starts feeling a little too permanent.

I don't even know what to say about this much anticipated romance except [incoherent noises] and AH THIS WAS WHAT I NEEDED. I bought a paperback copy because I loved it and want to keep it on my shelf (so pretty).

What I can mention is that Linden and Jasper are both pansexual, they are perfect for one another, and I loved how steady Linden was as Jasper figured out she deserved her happy.

More words to come later when I re-read!

Re-Read partially with some friends and I still don't even know how to describe how great this romance makes me feel. Damn. Definitely a top 10 favorite of 2021 for me.

I haven't read this book but I am so excited to! We desperately need more queer representation - especially with the men in romance novels. The idea that we need men to be straight for them to be "masculine" or desirable is so problematic and books like this help change the narrative! I can't wait to dive in :)

*Note* Not being attracted to someone bc of their bi/pansexuality is inherently homophobic and if that's you you may have some unpacking to do.

First of all, this book should come with a warning – but not the cute warning at the end of the blurb, readers need a real warning. As the writer didn’t provide it, let me give you the warning in case you would care about that issue.

The hero, Linden, is pansexual. We learn it when he says that his mother once caught him during a pansexual group sex.

Ever since my mother let herself into my hotel room and encountered me in the middle of a sweaty, sticky pile of pansexual skin the morning after my sister's wedding last summer, she'd made the occasional pointed statement about my romantic life.

The heroine says she also cares about people themselves, not their anatomy, which hints that she is also bi/or pansexual. She doesn’t reveal any more info, though.

“I have ended a relationship with a woman and promptly moved onto one with a man…”
She laughed a bit, saying, "I like people. The anatomy comes second."

Also, our hero Linden had deep feelings for a guy for 5 years until he died. They hooked up once but he couldn’t confess his deep feelings to him.

“Altogether, it was five, six years of my life spent getting close and losing him over and over, each time worse than the one before. After he died, I just didn't want to go through that ever again.”

I have no problems with people’s sexual tendencies and I am definitely not homophobic but if I am reading a romance book, I prefer my hero straight or else, I don't feel it. I read romance to feel something and when I cannot feel, what's the purpose, then?

That’s why I would have appreciated a warning. I always would like to know what I will be reading before I buy a book. And this warning I am providing is for people who feel and think like me.

I didn’t feel like dropping the book when I learnt about all that because there was also a good surprise for me. It was related to another book of this writer: “Boss in the Bedsheets”, which was a 5-star book for me. Only after I read a few chapters did I realize that the hero Linden in this book was the brother of Ash, the hero in “Boss in the Bedsheets”. Before starting this book, I didn’t know that it was connected to it. Because I liked to meet my beloved couple Ash & Zelda in this book, I went on reading.

*********************************************

Sadly, there are many other things that didn’t work for me in this book.

1. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters.

2. I didn’t like the character of the hero – I couldn’t connect with him. I remember not liking him in “Boss in the Bedsheets”, too. He seemed as if he didn’t care about his family much and all he wanted was to be left alone. That was the vibe he gave in that book and when the book started, he was still like that until he got interested in the heroine.

3. I didn’t like the heroine’s character either. Somehow, I felt disconnected with her, too. The way she avoided talking to her mother didn’t make sense. Also, the way she insisted on baking things, seeing how he hated her baking was not cute, that was definitely not cute. Such things made me feel disconnected with her.

As I didn’t care much about the characters, the length of the book felt too long, the very descriptive writing of Kate Canterbary, which I appreciated in her other book, felt like a torture here so I had to skip a lot.

*********************************************

All in all, the book would have been a 3-star book for me despite its boring details and all but I am deducting 1 more star because of the “lack of warning”, so 2 stars it is!

The Belle and the Beard by Kate Canterbary is a bit of a fairytale retelling and is also my very first book by this author. The blurb describes this as a Beauty and the Beast sort of story and that is definitely true. BUT, I think it even had a stronger vibe as a Red Riding Hood story. Our lumberjack is definitely a wolf. There are cottages. And he likes to use his teeth!

Jasper-Anne Cleary is thirty five years old and her life has just taken a nose dive right off the cliff into the rocks. She was a political strategist for a senator aiming for the presidency. A hot mike moment and some ill timed remarks tanked her career in a heartbeat. Now jobless needing somewhere to hide out for awhile, she heads to a tiny Boston suburb and to a cottage her aunt left her. A cottage that has been sitting empty for two years. But all she needs is a roof over her head and a place to plug in her toaster oven so she can make her fancy toast. But first, she’s got to get the door open.

Linden Santillan thrives on his solitude. He is an arborist. He spends his time alone in the woods with trees. It’s been two years since his neighbor passed. Now there is a strange woman carrying a toaster oven trying to break in the front door.

Linden doesn’t need to get himself involved in his new neighbor’s problems. But he just can’t seem to help himself. She works herself under his skin by trying to keep him away. She doesn’t want his help. But when she tries to wield power tools, or gets lost by getting stuck in traffic circles, he just can’t help himself.

These two were destined to combust and combust they did. Their chemistry was hotter than hot. Linden, who loved to be alone, just seemed to know what Jasper needed. Little by little, she revealed her past to him and little by little, he fell for her. They fell for each other. But Jasper’s life was still in turmoil. She needed to figure out what came next for her. She needed a job. She wasn’t the type to rely on a man.

“You did, you know. You cracked everything open. I haven’t been the same since.”
“Is that a good thing?”
“It’s the best thing.”

I am so in love with this book! These two were amazing. What a great way to be introduced to this author. I needed a fairytale retelling and it was the cover of this that first drew me in. I was hooked from the first page on. Jasper had so much to unpack. And I loved the way that Linden was able to draw her out little by little. That in the woods he loved so much, she found some peace as well. And I loved his family. His mother was a hoot! This was a wonderful book and I’m just so glad I decided to jump in.

5 🍑 stars!

“I ALWAYS KNEW Linden was a wolf at heart but now I knew he was a savage one at that.”

“Everything they said about wolves? It was true. They could see you better. They could hear you better. And they could eat you better.”

If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it 1,000x. Give me a Savage Wolf/lumberjack anyday. I just love that type of alpha, and Linden was all that more. This story was so perfect. I love a slow burn with that tension simmering underneath like a pot on the back burner. It keeps it simmering just enough for when you are ready to pour on whatever inside. Jasper Anne & Linden—heaven. Help. Me. What started out as what Linden “thought” was a break in, ended being so much more!

This story had heart, humor, burly gruffness, a little bit of the I hate you, but I can’t stop thinking about you vibe. Just plain Kate Canterbary goodness that I have come to love with every single book she writes. She is easily becoming a unicorn author for me. Love her voice and the way she writes her men, and her heroines.

The Belle and the Beard by Kate Canterbary
The Santillian Triplets #3. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Jasper retreats to a cabin in the woods when her job situation explodes. The cabin was owned by her aunt and has been empty for several years. Jasper’s not afraid of hard work and commits to getting the cabin habitable while she decides what’s next in her career.
Linden can’t help offering Jasper both physical strength in updating the cabin as well as emotional support as she heals and reassesses.
The two start a relationship that each must decide what the future looks like.

Empathy for Jasper in her career issues. Self assessment and life altering decisions are not fun. Especially when it’s not initially your idea.
I kept expecting him to be a supernatural because she mentions several times “the wolf in his eyes”. But no paranormal in this book.
It is very sexy and hot. There are quite a few encounters throughout the story.
An engaging romance on the serious side.

This took me a while... After a series of really good books I know I had to hit a bit of a slump.

It’s not that this wasn’t good. Overall I really liked the story, Lin and Jas were so good for each other, they had a cute not too swoony romance. But it took a while to get used to the author’s writing style and the book’s pace. I didn’t expect the self doubt she had and didn’t like all the “knowledge” about her he had a few minutes after meeting her for the first time.

To be honest I think it was because the expectations I had for this to be a light and funny read, but it turned out to be deeper than I needed.

Overall it was a good book, just not what I wanted or expected to read, but I’m happy I did. I can’t make sense today.

I love Kate Canterbary stories and I was super excited to read about the elusive Linden Santillian that had been introduced earlier in his siblings’ books. He is a truly fascinating character - a loner with a love for trees, a very fluid sexuality and a super strong family bond.

He was terrific. The grumpy hero and his sunshine girl are a favorite trope of mine, but Jasper-Ann wasn’t a sunshine girl. She was a hot mess. I never felt like I really bonded with her as a character. It felt like she was going through a couple of tough things, but was convinced she didn’t want anyone to care. But fortunately for her, Linden does.

Their catch phrase, “I don’t hate you” says it all. These are two people uncomfortable with their emotions and it takes them some time to work out communicating their feelings. A long time. Actually, a teeny bit too long. The book felt a little repetitive in areas - with multiple iterations of ‘Jasper would screw up and Linden would help’.

But when Jasper and Linden were together, it was terrific. They definitely had chemistry and a bit of yin/yang thing going on. This is a story that has you running the gamut of emotions, but mostly you are just happy that Linden and Jasper have finally found their person. Great read.

I received an advance copy of this book from Grey’s Promo and these are my honest opinions.

You know that fairy nymph we all thought Linden would end up with after reading Boss in the Bedsheets? Turns out instead that she's a political strategist (or rather was) that turns out to be Linden's newest next door neighbor and not the crowbar wielding burglar he (and Ash) assumed. If you have not read Boss in the Bedsheets, or The Magnolia Chronicles, it's okay, but really, I think you should read those two books before delving, but do you boo lol.

Let's start with Linden, shall we. The unassuming, quiet, bearded lumberjack looking triplet to Magnolia and Ash. He wants his quiet life, in his quiet one bedroom bungalow, until the crowbar wielding, mouthy southern belle makes an appearance to the abandoned home next door to Linden shows up.

Sweet, powerhouse political strategist Jasper-Anne Cleary is in Massachusetts, at the home she inherited from her Aunt Midge. One, she hasn't been in so many years. After spilling the proverbial tea during a campaign mixer on a "hot mic" about her candidate and his love for eating dairy when he shouldn't, well let's just say things went downhill real quick. Upon her arrival to her new home until she can regroup, she meets the mansplaining/lumberjack looking Linden. Can we say instant "hate" chemistry between these two.

The barbs back and forth, and the un-approach to baking or lack thereof is one for the ages people! Jasper is not the damsel in distress type of gal and as much as Linden thinks he wants to live the loaner life, well things do take a turn.

What is it about this author and her writing growly men but they seem more growlier and dirtier than the next? I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT!!!! And FFS do I come out smarter with each book. Did I mention Linden is an arborist (tree doctor)? Man she educates us on all things trees and political strategy without it being boring.

This is a longer, girthier book, again, I. AM. HERE. FOR IT! But man or man, get some tissues ready, because I should AF was not ready for water works coming down my face while reading. But the author will put you back together, this I promise.

I mentioned to another reading buddy why I loved this book and how different it was to her other books. She asked how, I said the there is not one thing, but many things. The direction and tone for sure and the tidbits. I love the zero fucks Jasper gave when she worked as a strategist, she got shit done, but at what price? And Linden, I totally understood him wanting solitude, but he needed this spitfire to shut that shit down and then some. Listen, I can go on and on singing the praises of this book, but I would be spoiling it for everyone.

Sit down, relax and enjoy, as sure AF did.

I was so excited picking up The Belle and the Beard. After all, Miss Canterbary writes a wonderful slow burn romance full of banter. I have to admit I am tad disappointed with this book.

I could not really connect with the characters. It is not about the sexual orientation, but more likely to with their interaction. The sex is hot. Of course. But I need more from the characters. More vulnerability. More tender, honest moment between them.

I still enjoy the story OK. Not loving it. Not hating it either.

Oh what a nicely written, steamy, push-and-pull romance this is. Unlike many reviewers, I really liked Jasper. So she was ballsy, closed-off and capricious - no-one is perfect! And how come it's OK for the heroes of books to have flaws, but the heroine has to be some perfect superhuman? Gah! give me real over impossible every time.

Kate Canterbary has a beautiful, poetic, descriptive, style of writing, one where every paragraph feels like a quote worthy moment. The prose draws you in and gives you ALL the feels. I don't form clear or distinct pictures as I read, but with this author - and this book - I am captured by the intensity of the emotions that are portrayed. You can't read a Kate Canterbary and not feel something.

I loved the protagonists, I loved the writing, I loved the push and pull, I loved the setting. This is a fairly long read and this, in part, is where it dropped a star. I'm really torn to say this but there were some parts that didn't really move the plot forward. The scenes were stunning in their beauty because, great writer alert, but cutting them from the final version wouldn't have disrupted the overall story flow. I still loved the scenes because of the #greatwriting and the feelings this book pulled from the depths of my soul and because the author has me there in every moment, living the story alongside the protagonists. So it hurts to have to criticise this book, but it wouldn't be fair of me not to mention that occasionally I wanted to press fast forward on this.

I haven't read the two previous books in the (very loose) series and managed fine in understanding everything, so it's definitely stand alone. It's also written, as is most contemporary romance, in alternating first person, allowing us to experience the full depth of each characters feelings and their inner thoughts. And what inner thoughts they were! Wow, the heat level of this book is H-I-G-H, be careful reading it in public. People will think you are mad, as you snigger out loud or swoon, and they definitely will wonder why you are becoming so flushed.

I really don't think I'll be able to do The Belle and the Beard justice! Kate Canterbary is one of my go to, favorite authors. So I know when I pick up one of her books I'm going to enjoy it. I was not, even remotely, disappointed with this book. If anything it exceeded my every expectation!

Linden and Jasper's story grabbed me from the start. From Linden thinking that Jasper could possibly be a burglar, to Jasper standing tall and fierce. It was hilarious. But it wasn't all laughs. It's raw emotion, it's fighting to figure out who you are, it's figuring out that it's ok the except help and let people in. It's hot steamy and it's falling in love. Gah! These two just so fit together. It's obvious in their witty banter and the way they just get each other. Their HEA? PERFECT!!

“Into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” - John Muir - Preface

What you need to know about “The Belle and The Beard”:
✔ Opposites Attract
✔ Dual Point of View
✔ Romantic Comedy
✔ Jasper-Anne Cleary, 35, out of work, newly single, campaign strategist
✔ Linden Santillian, 36, arborist, bearded grumpy neighbor
✔ Enemies to Lovers
✔ Can be read as a Complete Standalone
✔ Adventures in Dating #3

Jasper and Linden meet when he and his brother, Ash (Boss in the Bedsheets) notice her trying to break into the rundown house next to his. It was once owned by Midge Miseelbush who passed away two years prior. The author, from Linden’s perspective, describes Jasper’s walk as likely being able to open a “chasm deep enough to fully digest those who got in her way.” She is dressed in a 1950’s vintage style and speaks in a voice that is warm and Southern while also having a “destroy you like a kraken” vibe.

Then Linden notices that Jasper is gorgeous: “she reminded me of summer - screen doors banging in the breeze, ripe strawberries, and the kind of oppressive heat that sent sweat rolling down your back.”

Jasper describes Linden as a bear and a brute and his hands as paws. He’s “thick as a redwood and nearly as tall”, he has a “wolfish grin”, he’s beastly and more so than anything else he’s a wolf to her. She must face him head on as he’s a threat, like a wolf, to counter any attack.

The reader gets such rich descriptive impressions of the characters by Kate Canterbary in a few sentences. I really admire this about her writing.

Jasper is at the end of her rope after a difficult week. “I was all out of sweet and fight and the only card I had up my sleeve was the belief that I had this under control.” She is the queen of powering through problems. She’s been fired and is “radioactive” in terms of finding a new job after a slip up on live TV and is hiding out. She is determined to clean her way through all the guano in Midge's house, the painting, the porch problems and everything else in order to survive.

For some reason, her presence and her insistence on doing everything herself sets Linden off. Their relationship gets more and more out of control. Gradually after a breaking point this makes way for a growing and mutual attraction and soon they can’t keep their hands off of each other.
They are both somewhat messes: Jasper is professionally and personally and Linden is personally.

I loved revisiting the Santillian family and Ash and Zelda (Boss in the Bedsheets) and Magnolia and Rob (The Magnolia Chronicles). Their warmth and own brand of crazy was exactly what Jasper needed to find her balance and the sense of family that she’d been missing out on.

Linden’s “lumberbear” of a man is so multi-faceted, vulnerable, quiet and strong, angry and empathetic. I absolutely loved him.

Jasper and Linden’s relationship is many walks in the woods and slowly figuring each other out and themselves. It’s also a lot of terrible baked goods, fancy toast, an immortal cat and the wonderfulness of a crazy family. I highly recommend this lovely book and the entire series.

3.5 LumberBear stars!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but didn’t love it as much as I had hoped to. Beauty & the Beast is one of my favourite retellings to read and this was a very light interpretation of the story.

Jasper is our heroine who recently tanked her entire career with an on-air confession about her boss. My son’s middle name is Jasper so I had to continually remind myself during the read that it was the heroine and not the hero! I liked her gumption when it came to trying and make the best out of the situation she was in. Run down inheritance – check. House full of bats – check. Busted water tank – check. Grumpy neighbour who needs to mansplain everything – check.

I wanted to undo him in every way, wanted him as mindless as he made me.

Who doesn’t like a broody hero who enjoys his solitude? And, where can I find my own Lumberbear? I wanted to love Linden more… I wanted him more broody, a bit more of an angry grump.

My heart didn't choose anyone because it didn't want anyone. My heart loved solitude with some fun thrown in when the mood was right. My heart craved the predictable cadence of the earth moving through seasons. My heart wanted to beat free of entanglements.

At about 75% I got so annoyed with the heroine and almost threw in the towel.

Overall and enjoyable read that felt like a slow burn but there was plenty of heat.

To be honest, I expected to like this a LOT more than I did. While the sassy and fun Boss in the Bedsheets grabbed my attention from the first page, the somber Belle and the Beard never pulled me in. It’s long, and it felt that way. The problem might’ve been that I didn’t particularly like either character - at least for a long, long while. These two are not quite what I was expecting (more on that in a minute), and the story didn't really feel like a take on Beauty and the Beast. I ended up setting this down for a few days - and read a couple of other great books - but when I picked this back up, it wasn't with any real enthusiasm. That kinda says it all. Ultimately, I DID end up liking these characters more in the back half - but it took too long for that to happen.

The story follows Linden and Jasper, two strangers who become neighbors. Linden's a reclusive guy who likes his solitude when he wants it, and Jasper is a political darling who has fallen out of favor. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her life - while living in a rundown, unsafe home - Jasper becomes friendlier with Linden. The grumbly bear of a man has a sweet side, and it's not long before he's taking care of Jasper. Not that she'd ever allow that. The two clash but also come together, and their relationship continues to evolve before either of them realizes it. They're happy to heat up the sheets together, but neither one is looking for more.

This was one of my most anticipated books of the month. Not only does this author's writing style really work for me, but the blurb sounded so very awesome. And there ARE some great moments: I loved the chemistry between these two in the back half, the banter and the dialogue. Linden is actually a pretty sweet guy, and I loved watching him fall. However, I struggled with both Linden and Jasper in the beginning. Minor spoilers that I wish I knew before reading: Jasper is the kind of independent woman who likes to remind you of that on every page... and she’s married to someone else. And this reclusive hero? Is actually a manhoe who at one point recalls the time (somewhat recently) when his mom walked in on him in a “sweaty, sticky pile of pansexual skin.” I have no problem with the representation, but it was incorporated in an off-putting way, more than once. If you're looking for a non-player, loner hero... that's really not what you're getting here. It took awhile for me to readjust my expectations of the storyline, and that's definitely a big reason for my disconnect for so much of the book. It's certainly not bad, but it really isn't what I was hoping for - simple as that. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this rustic romance.

This is my first book from Kate Canterbary and it won’t be my last. Belle and the beard is the third novel in a series but is definitely a stand-alone. I hadn’t read the others and I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything.

We got a few of the tropes that I love,
* Fake dating
* Opposites attract
* Annoyed neighbours to Lovers. This is the essence of enemies to lovers, there was tension and grumpiness but I wouldn’t say they were ever enemies.

In the beginning I wasn’t sure if I’d like Linden. He was quite imperious in his interactions with Jasper. I sort of got ‘you shouldn’t use power tools because you’re a woman’ energy. Luckily that didn’t continue and his domineering attitude gave way to a more Stern brunch daddy vibe. He was overly concerned with her comfort and well being, not wanting her to compromise her wants or hold back for anyone else but was a boss and would absolutely give it to her in the bedroom.

Which brings me to the next point. The heat, good god, the heat! This was quite possibly the steamiest book I’ve ever read.
That has nothing to do with actual acts performed, or the amount of sex scenes. There weren’t that many (maybe 3?, and it was a long book) It all boiled down to the dirty talk and the build up of tension between these two. 🥵

The character development was also really good. Considering I went from mild dislike of Linden to love, and respecting Jasper’s strength but missing some warmth to absolutely adoring her.

I also LOVED the side characters. Linden’s mom was a meddling little hippy firecracker and cracked me up on a few occasions. Ash and Magnolia intrigued me as well and I think I’ll read their stories next.

To take a note from Linden and Jasper, and their way of expressing affection ... I definitely didn’t hate this book.

I’ll just go ahead and pop this in the ol’ recommend pile!!

I was provided an arc in exchange for my honest review.

This is hands down the best book I’ve read in 2021. Yes, I know we are only one third of the way into the year but listen, the humor, the characters, the story, the writing, the good, the bad, everything comes together to make you laugh, shake your head, feel the emotions, feel the support and yes feel the love that encompasses every single character in this book.

From a high-heeled, crowbar carrying whirlwind whose name is Jasper-Anne Cleary to the calm, bearded, growly lumberbear of a man that is Linden Santillion we have what has now become my favorite Kate Canterbary book!

Jasper is running away from the crazy that use to be her life and she runs right to a place no one would look for her, the house she inherited outside Boston. The house Aunt Midge left her.

Never for one minute did Linden think the crowbar/power drill-toting woman in high heels was a burglar. The house next door had been empty for at least 2 years, so it was probably someone from the town or maybe the person who owned it, burglars did not dress like that for a break and enter.

It’s this introduction to these two characters that begin a wild read that is the story of Jasper and Linden. From bats, to cats, to a small kitchen fire and so much more we get to see how Linden’s quiet and calm helps Jasper begin to realize there will be a life after DC and her job, there will be laughs, talks while walking in the woods and that kiss it was more than a spark it was an explosion that was the beginning of them.

Add in the rest of the Santillion family in all their glory how can this not be fantastic. Jasper has more to overcome than just the job fiasco, she needs to realize who she is, how people see her not how she sees herself and how strong she really is. Linden has to learn a few things as well, he is great at talking her through issues but not so good at talking to her about feelings, you know using his words when it comes to his growing feelings for her.

You have to read this book, you have to laugh along with them and cry with Jasper and you have to clean out Aunt Midge’s cupboard with Jasper because that right there, that was just awesome! Enjoy, laugh, cry and reread when needed!

Kate thank you for sharing Jasper and Linden with us. I just love being pulled into your characters world. Once I read the blurb, I was like give them to me. A grumpy, stoic, growly beast of a man and a beautiful, intelligent, sassy confident and let us not forget out spoken woman.
Jasper-Anne Cleary is on the top of the political strategist game. A star in her world but one slip of the tongue on live tv and her world comes crashing down around her and she flees to escape the fallout. She finds herself at the home that her aunt left her over a year ago deep in the woods, away from the political drama and filled with nature and solitude. Linden Santilliane is a arborist, a loner and a full blown alpha burly man. His first glimpse of Jasper he is unsure if she is a thief or a new neighbor but he is about to go find out! Get ready because these two people and worlds are about to collide and the result is just wonderfully entertaining and beautiful.
Their first meeting is no where near what you would call meet cute. They have sarcastic, witty, intelligent banter that is just delightful. They each want to control the conversation and outcome and well that is just not going to happen. It is apparent that they quickly figure out how to push each others buttons and that is just how this is going to go. I truly enjoyed watching this couple grow, build and compliment one another in ways that neither one knew that they needed. The dance between give and take was just so lovely. As they each learned more of what made each other tick they soon figured out how to exist, cohabitate and just be in each others world. We also were once again treated to some of our favorite characters from that past since Linden is a triplet and his siblings are Ash and Magnolia ! Loved it !

Quick(ish) Review

Lumberbear romances are where it’s at, people.

I loved a lot about this book. I loved that Linden and Jasper’s personal journeys were well done, that their Firsts were scorching hot and that they’re both “love the wine, not the label” people. Truly some smutty goodness here.

The family scenes were as fun as ever, with great little references to old faves. As always, I love how Ms. Canterbary can give good romance and good friendship scenes and those epilogues were the cherry marmalade on top. Loved it, happily recommend it.

Linden likes the quiet life, surrounded by nature with the odd visit here and there from his family, but when his new neighbour arrives his quiet life is about to change!

Jasper-Anne needs to get away after a bit of a disastrous career move she needs to regroup. Then she runs into her new neighbour, while she is trying to break into her house, who just can help offering his assistance which she definitely does not need and doesn't want!

The sparkes fly straight away for these two and their chemistry is undeniable!

I loved the relationship Linden had with his mum who has to be one of my favourite characters ever! I loved catching up with Ash and Magnolia again and seeing what's happening in their world!

Is Growly gruff Linden about to meet his match with sweet, but takes no nonsense Jasper-Anne who likes to thank everyone with baked goods!

I LOVED Linden and Jasper-Anne! Loved this series!

I struggled with this one for close to 50%. I initially found her frustrating, but liked him. His relationship with his mom and siblings made the story more enjoyable.

3 star story, and an additional star because I like KC’s writing.

I have to admit that while this book was described as a beauty and the beast rendition, I didn't get that. What I did get from this book, for which I received an early copy, was plenty of humor and steam and just overall fun. The banter between Jasper and Linden, the zingers back and forth, well those were hilarious. Linden's family? Awesome and hilarious (And I met them first in Boss in the Bedsheets, which I bought the audiobook for- and it was great). The premise is amusing- Jasper is a political PR person- she makes her politicians look good- until an active mic outed what she really thought. As she hits rock bottom, she moves to dilapidated house left to her by her auntie, who passed away 2 years ago. In between making the house livable, she meets Linden and sparks fly, especially as she tries to feed him her subpar baked products (I laughed a lot at those descriptions mostly because I'm an awful baker and cook). I loved their relationship and the relationship between Linden and his family. I chuckled a lot, enjoyed the evolution of their relationship and I would describe this as a relatively low angst, fun romantic comedy.

As soon as I finished this scrumptious morsel of sexy goodness, I went back to some of my fave scenes and re-read them over and over again. It's the story of a young woman at a crossroad in both her professional and personal lives, who decides to regroup and lick her wounds by heading back to the only place that's ever really felt like home to her. But that place also happens to be a dilapidated old cottage in dire need of TLC, and her burly mountain of a neighbour is set on offering unsolicited advice no matter how many times she thanks him for his help with barely edible homemade goods. I DEVOURED this book like I was starving—the chemistry between the leads, the emotional complexity of these characters, the WRITING hooking me in from the get-go. I have to be honest, I somehow stumbled into this series at the very end (this is the third instalment in a series of interconnected standalones where each Santillian triplet gets their own book), but I was totally okay. From what I gathered about the triplets, Linden (the hero in this book) would have been my fave all along. I loved this book so much that I ordered the print copy at around the half way mark.

I just loved this story. Lots of humor, plenty of heat and a light touch of angst kept me absorbed, invested and entertained.
-5 Stars-

“He nodded as he flipped open the buttons at his cuffs and it was inconsiderate of him to roll up his sleeves while I recounted today's trauma. Seriously inconsiderate. I loved those forearms. The muscles, the hair, the veins. It was so strange to love veins but I loved his veins. And when he crossed his arms over his chest with his sleeves rolled up? My god. There was no saving my panties from that.”

The Belle And The Beard is the kind of book that leaves you with a satisfied smile on your face. Kate Canterbary is one of those authors that I look forward to reading because I know I’m going to be equal parts entertained and turned on. Jasper and Linden are such amazing characters. There is more to them than meets the eye and as you peel each layer back, you find more reasons to like them. Their attraction to one another is undeniable, their chemistry off the charts but what I loved most was watching them spar with their words. To say that The Belle And The Beast is an entertaining read, is not doing it justice. This book is everything a great romance read should be. TBR and Enjoy.

If you want a list-maker, high heels-wearing political fixer who meets a grumpy loner romance, The Belle and the Beard needs to be next on your TBR.

From the very beginning when Linden thinks she's a burglar and is trying to enter the house next door to rob it to the very end, these two characters made me fall madly in love with their story. This is such a cozy romance, it's really perfect for autumn/winter. Grab a cup of your favorite hot beverage and go to town with this book! It'll be the perfect afternoon.

Linden and Jasper bicker 24/7 even when they're having sex. It's such a wonderful thing to witness and I crave more and more of their encounters with each chapter. Linden wants to live a very lonely life, or well, he wants to have his space, you know? But when Jasper moves next door and crashes into his already-established life, he doesn't know what to do. The only thing to do is to open up his heart and kick down those walls. The way they left notes for each other when they were missing each other, the way that he always came to her rescue even if she didn't want to, the way that she made him every type of baked good to tell him thank you for everything... these two get to you!!! Your heart will be compromised instantly.

If you want a story where they don't say "I love you" because they're scared and instead they say "I don't hate you" but the meaning is still there, pick up this book. This book is also about finding a family, finding a community where you can belong, finding yourself in the midst of a life-changing event, finding something to hold on to.

I am a fan of messy characters so I liked how this focused on heroine Jasper being in a shitty in between phase. What do you do when you structure your whole life and identity around a job you never even liked? You crash and burn, end up in a shitty cottage that’s falling down around you, and spend some quality naked time with your pushy yet weirdly (to you) supportive caretaker neighbor.

If you liked Far Cry, I feel like this will be similarly up your alley. It alternates high heat sexiness with string emotions and difficult subjects. Jasper had a lot of moments that really resonated with me. Also, both main characters are unabashedly pansexual and that was really nice to see on page.

And shout out to Linden’s hilarious mom. I have always loved her as a character since Magnolia’s book but high grandmazilla had me in stitches.

CWs: grief (loss of a close friend, loss of a parent by suicide), toxic and abusive childhood, intrusive thoughts about body and appearance, behind the scenes political machinations
