As the only Beckett cousin who is still unattached, I'm a shoo-in to win the bet with my cousins to be the last man blissfully not in love by Christmas. Of course, I know they're still going to make me follow the rules of our bet and go on six dates with the same woman—but I've figured out a way out of that too. I'm getting married. Is it love? Not even close. Chelle Finch needs a temporary husband and I need to win this bet. We agree to put a ring on it knowing that in six months this marriage of convenience will end in divorce. Except, somehow dating my wife has me realizing that I don't ever want to take this ring off if it means losing her.

What does the guy who can talk his way out of anything have to do to sweet talk his temporary wife into forever?

I think it’s great to be able to read a story that has you smiling and really enjoying the entire book.

While the story has a familiar overall theme, Flynn has totally turned it on its head and brought us a story that is unique, fun, and charming.

Delightful twist between an older woman and a younger man, we get a different flavor of how he takes care of her. But in return, she’s also helping him become a better man in many aspects.

I really loved Beckett. He was super caring and sweet; nonjudgmental and sexy as sin.

Chelle was humorous, stressed, and a little odd, but a beautiful balance for him. One thing I did not care about her and that is how she was depicted in the book.

While I absolutely have no issue with a “curvy“ woman, being one myself, all of the depictions of her took almost a negative connotation. She was described as having fat rolls, pillowy boobs (God, I hate that Terminology), thick thighs, and many other derogatory descriptions.

If people are going to write about women being fat or “large“, why do we have to read detailed descriptions that become a descriptor of the story? Why can’t someone just be big? Or curvy, if you like that better. Needless to say, it bugged me. I really wish that would leave romance books. If you want to write about a big beautiful woman then just leave it as such.

But did I enjoy the book? Heck, yes!!!!!!!! This story is fun and full of heat, and honestly, Beck was a dreamboat! Once you got past the mansplaining… he was awesome! Flynn crafted a delightful, sexy romp full of creativity and laughs.

DNF 51%

The female lead in this book is 42 years old and a U.S. size 16—and this entire book is about how OLD and FAT she is.

Every physical description of her includes "round", "soft", or "ample". As a plus size woman, I very much appreciate seeing curvy women in romance. This book's take on it just didn't feel genuine or even complex. It felt a bit like a thin author trying to write a larger heroine. It just wasn't successful for me.

The heroine also complains about pre-menopausal hormones. Bitches, SHE'S 42. There is a lot of talk about her aging out of dating and family life. Sure, there definitely ARE women who experience pre-menopause symptoms at this age, but the whole vibe of this book felt like this heroine is 80 years old. Again, maybe this is just my 44 year old self balking at this portrayal of the lead, but it didn't ring true for me.

A quirky, bibliophile, 40+ heroine who has a lot of pets, and treats those pets like children, has been DONE TO DEATH. I am so ready to read a kick-ass, 40+ woman, with a thriving career who is driven, put together, and not going to bed at 9:00pm every night with cats and The Great British Bake-Off on Netflix. PLEASE, AUTHORS. I AM BEGGING YOU.

Besides that, I felt almost no chemistry between the leads. I absolutely LOVED the first two books in this series, but this one just did not work for me.

Mansplainer is book 3 of the Last Man Standing series by Avery Flynn. It is a standalone romantic comedy told from both points of view with a happy ending.
Tropes:
✔️marriage of convenience
✔️reverse age gap
✔️billionaire hero

The final book in the Last Man Standing series is full of cute, lighthearted fun full off an adorable, well-meaning Mansplainer who can’t wait to seduce his wife.

Michelle Finch doesn’t want love (she’s perfectly content writing about it) but does need a husband ASAP in order to fulfill her father’s will and be able to take control of the charity foundation she’s dedicated her life to.

Nash Beckett knows he’s going to get grandma Betty’s undisclosed present at Christmas. His other cousins have succumbed to love (which he won’t) and he only needs go on six dates set up by said cousins with the first woman who answers his dating profile. The rules don’t state it can’t be his wife of convenience.

There’s only just one problem, soon after Chelle and Nash get married, he realizes he wants to seduce her.

I really enjoyed the smiles produced by the puppies, meddling family and this charming couple. Avery Flynn did a great job of concluding the series with this sweet and fun story.

This series has been so fun watching and experiencing these men fall, one by one for love. Each fella thought they had a handle on their life, no room for a serious love relationship. It took a challenge to remain loveless by Christmas and be the "winner" of their beloved grandmother's last Christmas gift.

A challenge was set; a bet, the gift given to the one who remained "loveless" by the next time they celebrate. Little did they realize, as always, that Grandma knew best.

Beckett is the last one standing, and as the creator of the bet, feels he has a lock on this deal.
When making the bet, he never mentioned any conditions of a marriage that would qualify for the necessary time needed to win...He has decided to do the "marriage of convenience" deal and then claims the win. He even announces that to his family during a meal.

Chelle Finch is living that saying of Rock and Hard Place. Her family's ideas of how a woman should behave, live her life, and should only marry is her challenge. She has been in charge of a charity for years, helping others, and making a difference. The time, it seems has come per her dead father and now icky uncle, to either marry or lose the charity she runs. See, Rock and Hard Place.

Due to some special fateful arrangement, these two meet and become the answer to each's needs. The trick will be if they can co-exist and not kill each other. You see, Beckett, as the oldest of his family, developed this thing...always needing to fix what he sees as needing help...Mansplaining. He means well, and many of the things he suggests are real BUT they are not asked for...so annoying.

So with this "marriage", a condition for it to happen is for him to curb this thing he does.

This was so much fun, so hot, and also written to address this issue we, as women, experience ALL THE TIME. Oh, and in case you wanted to know, Grandma, DOES KNOW BEST.

This was a really fun conclusion to the Last Man Standing series. Nash honestly could have easily been a very annoying hero with his tendency to mansplain just about everything. Or at the very least, put his nose into things no one asked him too. But he turned out to be a pretty fun character and his habit of trying to fix things for people actually put a smile on my face - mostly. Especially when Chelle was there to point out to him just how annoying that habit of his could be.

Chelle was also a great character to read about and she and Nash made the perfect couple. She wasn't some shy wallflower but just like most people she did have her insecurities and things that she overly worried about. So it was perfect to see how she was with Nash who was one of the only people that was actually rooting for Chelle to succeed.

Overall, this book was well worth the wait and I highly recommend reading this series.

I’ve read a lot of stories about bigger girls, but they’re always described as curvy with an hourglass figure. But bigger girls with other body shapes exist too! And this book was about one of them.

I loved Chelle as a character. She isn’t confident nor unsure about her figure, she just doesn’t really care. She’s been called fat by her family–toxic, isn’t it?–and she accepted it, without changing the way she eats or anything. She just has a bigger purpose: she wants to show how capable she is when her family wanted her to be a housewife and nothing else. I suppose that’s also the reason why she doesn’t dye her hair to hide her grey strands.

She’s also older than Nash. He was a great character too. I was a bit afraid of the “mansplainer” thing, and the way it’s explained didn’t completely assuage my fears. I get that he’s been in charge of his family for so long he needs to have control of everything, but he’s old enough to understand that free will is a thing. But he also has the best intentions, and he sure appreciates Chelle just as she is. A bit fetishizing? Maybe, except that it is said that he usually dates people different than her. He’s so willing to change in the end that he made me swoon big time.

Their fake-turned-real relationship was delicious. I enjoyed the domesticity and the slow seduction. They also had each other’s back. Relationship goals? Maybe, except for the fake marriage.

They both had their share of helpers and opponents, though Chelle clearly had fewer people in her corner. It was actually one of the interesting aspects of the story: Chelle compares the Becketts’ dynamics with how her own family worked. There’s a whole theme about expectations going on in the book, and I thought it was well written. How they can be a burden, how to get away from them, how to manage the one you have of yourself…

There sure is a lot of humor, but it comes from the writing, less from the situations or the characters. The style was witty and sometimes quirky. Some repetitions were unnecessary, but overall it was a pleasure to read.

Quickie

- Series: Last man standing #3 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romcom #fake marriage #reverse age gap #dog lovers
- Triggers: misogyny, fat shaming
- Main couple: Michelle Finch & Nash Beckett
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 5/5
- + the way Nash loved Chelle BECAUSE of her size and her age
- – I wasn’t on board with the mansplainer thing, and the explanation wasn’t enough

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

I really wanted to like this one but in the end, it just wasn't for me. I love this author so I was a little surprised when I finished reading the book. There were certainly things that I enjoyed about the book but the overall wow factor was nonexistent for me.

Flynn is great with her storytelling. I always love her writing voice because her books always feel like they were written just for me. The premise for this book was great but I think that it lacked in execution. There were just some parts of the book that felt disjointed. I loved the overall world-building and the connection to the other books in the series.

Chelle and Nash were characters that had a lot of potential but fell flat for me. They both certainly had some great character growth but I was left wanting more. I did love seeing all of the other characters from the rest of the series.

The romance was not as convincing as I would have liked for it to be. Chelle and Nash both enjoyed each other's company and had great chemistry but most of their interactions felt very surface level most of the time. There were exceptions in some scenes but as a whole, I wasn't totally convinced by their love.

Overall, this is a story with a lot of potential but wasn't entirely convincing for me. There are definitely enjoyable moments in the book and I would definitely recommend this author but this book just doesn't feel memorable to me. While this book didn't work out for me I am still eager to read the next book from Avery Flynn!

Quick(ish) Review

I wanted to love this because it’s older woman/younger man, with a plus size FMC who’s a writer. But fell flat because the amount of focus on her weight and the fat shaming scenes really threw me out of the romance and just irritated me. Oh well.

The final installment of the Last Man Standing series was not only fun but absolutely enjoyable. I wasn’t expecting an older, curvy woman and I couldn’t have been happier. Chele and Nash were hysterical. A woman set in her ways, brought up in a family that felt a woman’s place was barefoot and pregnant and doing her husband’s bidding and a man that just had to explain everything, “suggest” things should be his way and win at any cost. A match made in heaven? Yea, no. But, it didn’t have to be a love match, it was an arrangement and nothing was going to stop them from getting what they wanted. Of course, with one catch … Chelle was going to break Nash of his mansplaining!

What a fun time I had reading Mansplainer. My ultimate goal was to find out what was in the last present. It drove me nuts throughout the story. I couldn’t wait to get to the end. But, there was a lot to get through to get there. And, I had a blast with Chelle and Nash, Sir Hiss, Groucho Barks and Mary Puppins. Not so much with Uncle Buckley or Suzanne. I loved the scene in the hallway. I didn’t know if I should laugh out loud or groan. Definitely a roll-your- eyes moment. But, that’s Avery Flynn’s sense of humor.

So, I am not giving away any more of this story. You just have to laugh your way through the furniture changes, the paint changes and the cat on a leash yourself. Then you have to fall in love with Nash getting down and playing with the dogs and replicating the office. You will have to adore Chelle and her fantasy world and take take no prisoners attitude … yourself.

I am always assured that Avery will make me laugh out loud. That she’ll give me an enjoyable, cohesive story with a happily-ever-after that will put a smile on my face. She brings back characters that are meaningful to the story and just add more fun to it. And, last but not least, I got to find out what was in the present! Surprised, most definitely but absolutely loved it. I shook my head and thought “only Avery”.

Mansplainer is the third book in the crazy Last Man Standing Series from Avery Flynn.
Nash Beckett is literally The Last Man Standing but based on the rules of the competition he created he cannot win by default. Lucky for us… Nash has a plan! Just like Dix and Griff, Nash must go on six dates and not fall in love. He refuses to be like the other two whose attempts flopped when they met the loves of their lives.
My one piece that really bugged me in this book was the way in which Chelle was described. I am very hard on a curvy heroine because I very much want the rep to be done well. This was not. Chelle viewed herself in a very negative light. She was described as having fat rolls, pillowy boobs thick thighs, and many other derogatory descriptions. I really hated them all. It made difficult for me to continue on with the book.

If you are going to write a plus size heroine why does it have to have negative descriptions? Why can’t we embrace the curves and the beauty of everybody. I get it can be a device to help move the story and create angst but being fat is not a personality trait. Being fat does not mean that is all there is to a person. I just wish Chelle was loved as she was. I wish it has been more embraced.
Outside of this one issues I really did like this story. I loved Nash as the good guy. This series was so fun and just want I want in a rom-com. The emotions of this story and the bit of the twist with the package from Grandma Beckett was unexpected and bittersweet.

Story: 2 or 2.5 ⭐️ I can’t decide yet lol
Steam: 3.5 🔥 mix of moderately detailed scenes and closed door scenes
Audio: 5 🎧

Oof. Okay so let me preface this with I love Avery Flynn’s writing, I loved books 1 & 2, I’ve loved her series in the past and will ABSOLUTELY read on it/when she writes the stories for the other cousins.

With that being said, this might be my least favorite Flynn book. I think my main issue was that from the beginning, just didn’t like either of the main characters. I felt like Nash was just grating on my nerves for the whole book lol and I get why he is the way he is but it didn’t make him less annoying. As for Shelle, my girl is literally 42 and a size 16 and all we hear about is how she’s “too old and fat for love” and how she’s got grey hair and she’s SO OLD. Be so for real right now 🙃 that drove me nuts. Cause it wasn’t just the asshole uncle saying this shit it was her too! It was hard to not imagine her as the old lady with the apple in Snow White.

I also think this book was a tad liberal with the definition of mansplaining. At times, yes that is what was happening but a lot of the time he was just being controlling and micromanaging everyone’s life. I wouldn’t really call that mansplaining. Annoying? Absolutely but not necessary mansplaining.

Anyways I really hope that the rest of the cousins get a book cause I would love to read them. This one was just a miss for me.

I have been enjoying this series so much. And just knew their grandmother had the perfect plan to marry off her grandkids 😊 And especially after the previous one and that ending, where Nash announced his getting married, lol

Nash is the last one still standing and in the running to win the gift. But he still needs to go on his 6dates with the same woman, and he knows his cousins wont let him get away with not doing it. So he decided to get married. And Chelle is just the one as she needs a husband to help her out.
Chelle Finch needs a readymade husband to comply with her fathers will, so she can save her charity. So when Nash offers up the solution to get married, she is all for it on one condition… He stops his mansplaining…lol

I enjoyed this one so much. Nash drove me crazy with his mansplaining. I loved Nash and Chelle’s dates. This story kept me on the edge of my seat with the laughter and the slow burn romance.I want real life to work this way, lol… This story was hot and sexy and everything that you would want in a romantic comedy, but also had some deep moments in between 😊

Chelle was raised in an affluent lifestyle however she has always been looked down on based on her gender and physical appearance. She wants to continue the charity her father started but that is being threatened as the only way to protect it is to marry. She never expected help to come in the form of a fake marriage to a younger, sexy man who believes he needs to provide guidance to everyone he meets.

Nash has the perfect plan to ensure that he gets the final gift that his grandmother left to him and his cousins which is a fake marriage with a predetermined expiry date. Their marriage was an arrangement and he never expected to develop feelings for his wife or that their fake relationship would start to feel so real.

Both Chelle and Nash have some challenges to overcome as although Nash has the best of intentions it doesn’t always come across that way while Chelle has always felt like she wasn’t enough so she is uncertain how to deal with the escalating feelings between her and Nash. When you combine the boisterous family, the humor and the romance you are sure to be entertained.

This is book 3 in the Last Man Standing contest between the Beckett Cousins. Up for grabs is a present from their grandmother Betty, but no one knows what it is. 2/3 of the Becketts found love and Nash Beckett swears he isn’t going to suffer the same fate. He’s been set up by his mother to meet Chelle who has a challenge of her own - she has to be married so her douchey uncle doesn’t get his hands on her foundation. She doesn’t want love, she just wants to be able to keep helping her community through her foundation. She’s 42 and has well and truly given up on love, preferring to write about it in her books she doesn’t intend to get published.

This is fun wrap up to this series. Nash is a good character but a bit of a pain given he tries to solve everyone’s problems. It’s his identity though, and you can see how this role has been born through the responsibility within his family - he’s kind of lost without it. Chelle is constantly challenged by this aspect of Nash, even though he’s trying to ‘help’ her. She’s strong, intelligent, and she doesn’t need a man to make decisions on her behalf.

As expected, Grandma’s gift - a tad anticlimactic …. But good to have the series wrapped up.

I found that Chelle and Beckett balanced each other out perfectly. If you’re looking for a cute summer read then definitely pick up this series! (This is book 3 of the Last Man Standing series). I think all of us have met a Mansplainer like Nash Beckett in their life but I bet none of them is wickedly sexy, simply gold hearted and an all around perfect catch. I wish I could channel the fierce energy of Chelle Finch's bossy queen personality in my life because this woman is absolutely amazing. And Avery Flynn made them fall in love and lust in this swoony, steamy and quirky rom com in her special style.

Nashville Beckett, one of the owner of Beckett Cosmetics has to win the Last Man Standing bet with his cousins to claim their late grandma's last Christmas gift. Chelle Finch needs a readymade husband to fulfill the archaic clause in her father's will as she has to save her charity foundation from getting destroyed. Nash has the perfect solution. Get married. Go on six dates with his "wife". Win bet and help Chelle. But she has one condition. He has to stop mansplaining.

When I started the book, I was sceptical about Nash because oh my god, mansplaining makes me see red. I just cannot do it. So Avery Flynn had an impossible job. And damn she excelled at it. She dug deep into his tendency to over explain and give unsolicited advice and showed that it is just a manifestation of his attempts to keep his family in place and to achieve control. And my heart ached for him. He is a protector and caregiver and problem solver. He is the solid support and calm solace. And he can also be ridiculously charming and seductive. And Chelle brought him down on his knees.

This is a reverse age gap romance. She is older than Nash and has a curvy body to die for and I am here for it! She shows her confident sassy side everywhere but she also has a vulnerable side. She didn't want to want Nash and he was driving her crazy but when he was determined to win her heart and body, he is just impossible to resist. I loved how Nash respected her work and her choices while being supportive and also pushing her for more. Of course it was a tough balance..for Chelle to be tough yet open, for Nash to be alpha yet sweet..and they slipped and got hurt but it all came together beautifully.

It was so much fun and entertainment as they went through some colourful dates as stipulated by Nash's cousins and as they explored their likes and dislikes. It was uber hot and sexy and oh my god panty melting slow burn as they resisted their chemistry till the point where they had to explode. It started as a fake relationship for convenience but slowly they fell for each other. It went from swoony to flirty to sexy to deep emotional at blink of an eye. I loved meeting the whole Beckett family and I was so ready to for the big reveal of Grandma's gift and it was fitting.

First let me just say that I absolutely adore Avery Flynn and have devoured all her Harbor City books. I love how she connects the multiple series. This book works in the Ice Knights, Hartigans, Dating Disasters, and the Killer Style series

Mansplainer is the last book in the Last Man Standing trilogy that follows first cousins Dixon, Griff, and Nash Beckett. The Beckett family comes from money, their grandma played a major part in their upbringing. Following her passing they discovered a wrapped but unlabeled Christmas gift. Nash specifically was provided with a letter with her desires.

Book One: Dixon & Fiona, Nash proposes the bet that they have to each go on 6 dates and not fall in love. The Last Man Standing (Single & Not In Love) on Christmas will be the winner and gets to open the gift.

Book Two: Griff & Kinsey (Introduces us to Griff's sister Morgan)

Book Three: Nash & Chelle (No connecting series BUT shows us more interactions between Nash's single siblings sister Bristol and brother Macon and drops possible hints for future books and I think a possible Ice Knight connection!! But that's just MY theory)

I'm not gonna lie I was salty that I this book took longer than expected to release. I was emotionally committed to this bet and the Beckett family, I had this book preordred and an alarm on my calendar for the release so when it got pushed back by months, I felt some kind of way.

All my petty anger went out the window once I finally read this book though. LOL

Nash is called a mansplainer because he is always trying to tell people how to do things. He's that guy that gives suggestions, drops data, and references various legal and medical journals to strangers just so they know. We all know men like Nash. I appreciate that Avery took this off putting personality type and showed us layers as to why someone can be that way. Uber controlling, constantly suggesting and prying.

Chelle was so unexpected for me. She's older than Nash by 8 years, plus size, and has a ton of grey hair that she doesn't try to hide with hair dye. She's a book nerd, who lives a simple life with her fur babies. She carries trauma from being raised by a controlling father that raised her to believe her worth as a woman doesn't go beyond being a wife and mother.

I loved these two as a couple. Spice level is a 2.5. The ending provided the POVS from Dixon and Griff as the gift was finally opened. I look forward to more Harbor City series and am very interested in seeing the rest of the Beckett's find love.

I recommend this book/series as well as any and all books set in Harbor City.

This is Nash Beckett and Michelle's story, it was quite entertaining, I loved Nash, having a curvy woman made this story quite interesting when it was an older woman and younger man trope, so quite refreshing and original. Chelle is an amazing character, I really like how the author developed her and the plotline. I really think if you like these tropes give it a go, it was so fun to read after so many dark romances.

My thoughts: 📱22% 1:31:05 Chapter 8 Nash December 2nd - This features my favorite trope so I'm excited about what happens next. I may have to organize more to find out.

There was a lull in the middle and the third-act makeup was odd, but overall it was a cute story and I thought the present was great. I'm going to read a few more of her series.

Recommend to others: Yes. This series was a fun ride.

I’m glad that Chelle apologized because I was about to say it would’ve been wrong for Nash to apologize first. When Michelle pushed him away just because he only wanted to help her.

But that uncle of hers was a horrible man you could tell that he didn’t want her to have nothing or wanted her to be happy. Kept saying nobody would want her. When someone would and does that is Nash. He made her feel bad and felt like she wasn’t worth it. But I was glad that Nash did showed her that he wanted her regardless of their marriage turning out fake in the beginning to becoming real in the end.

Also in the end Nash was the one who won the last name standing. But I do wonder if Macon, Morgan and Bristol going to end up with a book of their own. Is one of the girls going to end up with one of the Hartigan brothers because I swear I thought it was one more single brother. I could be mistaken.

I’ve been hooked on Avery Flynn since my first read from the author, and I’m always eager to dive into a new release. The Last Man Standing series is one that has had me curious throughout, and I’ve been eager to see how everything comes together.

While I would not label Mansplainer my favourite in the series, it was another story that I managed to devour in no time. Once I was pulled into the story, I was turning the pages at a rapid pace to get more of the events that were playing out. I didn’t quite fall for this one as deeply as I did the prior books in the series, but it was an entertaining read. Plus, there were some snippets that left the potential for more from the characters that I’ve fallen for throughout the series.

All in all, this is worth reading if you enjoyed the prior books in the series.

Mansplainer by Avery Flynn is part of the Last Man Standing series and gives us Nash Beckett’s story. Nash wants to win the last gift from his grandma and be the last one standing. But he never saw Chelle coming. He does not want to fall in love and Chelle needs a husband. So, they can help each other out right? Enter a marriage of convenience. Clean, simple, and easy. But things are never what they seem. When you think of Nash, obviously you think of the name of the book, but Nash he was also sweet. Chelle was dealing with some family drama and trying to keep her family’s charity. She was smart, older, and determined. Mansplainer by Avery Flynn was an age-gap, marriage of convenience romance that was sweet and fun to read.

Happy reading!
