I’ve had a crush on my best friend for as long as I can remember. But he’s a hockey winger, who has quite a reputation with the puck bunnies, and I’m a nerdy girl trying to survive my biochemistry degree as a single mom.
If science has taught me anything, it’s that facts don’t lie. The truth is Ryse and I are from two completely different worlds. He’s headed for the pros, and I hypothesize I’ll be left behind… again.
Ryse might not be boyfriend material, but he makes a great fake fiancé because he’s fooling even me. After months of subtle touches and staged kisses, our experiment finally combusts.
He may be a reckless player… but his pretend love is the realest thing I’ve ever felt.
Ryse
After my gorgeous best friend moves in next door, things go from friend zone to off-the-charts chemistry. Now I’m seeing the sexy single mom in a whole new light.
It’s my year to go pro, and before I can draft, I need to clean up my playboy reputation and graduate. I can’t risk a relationship… or my friendship with Paris. When she needs a fake fiancé to get her son into private school, I do what any good friend would do—I volunteer.
But the closer we get, the more blurred the lines become. Falling for her is a complication I didn’t calculate… but pretending to love her is the easiest game I’ve ever played.
I just hope when the game is over, I don’t lose her for good.
Oh man! Ryse had his work cut out for him with Paris. She did not make it easy for him to win her heart. I did feel that the lady doth protest too much and for a little too long, but I'm not a single mother with a history of bad relationships. It a testament to Stephens writing that enjoyed this as much as I did. I always feel like I'm reading about real people instead of characters.
Reckless Player hit on a couple tropes friends to lovers, single parent and fake relationship all set in college. It is the fourth book in the Westfall U series but can be read as a standalone.
I’m definitely in the minority but this didn’t work for me at all. This is my first book by the author. Personally, I really struggled with the writing in here. It was very stilted and didn’t flow well. It was super distracting for me. Also, I felt like there was little to no chemistry between the main characters. Just a miss for me overall.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ryse, you beautiful beautiful man. I knew you would knock me off my feet. Your caring nature, your loving heart, your relationship with Max... it was all so sweet. The swoon factor was real.
I loved the entire storyline, despite having read countless numbers of similar books.
Their attraction was evident in the last book and the dial was cranked all the way up in this one. It went from sizzling to blazing hot in the blink of an eye.
I am really enjoying this series, I can't wait to read Blossom and Cait's stories!
I think this is a pretty good read. But I did find Paris to be a little bit frustrating. I get that she's been burned before but I get the feeling that she's always one foot out the door and just waiting for Ryse to mess things up. She said she's protecting Max but she's also guarding herself. But she's not the only one though because Ryse's father also did him a number. And I kind of feel bad for Ryse because he's really trying and the moment she heard something that's not true, she runs. I wasn't even surprised that was her reaction. I kind of expected that to happen.
I did enjoy the appearance of the previous characters though and to see how their story continues to this book too.

Voto 3,5 .
Paris needs a fake fiancé to help her son get into a great school. Her best friend Ryse needs to clean up his playboy image. So a fake relationship between the two is really their only option. But of course, feelings that were already there, become even stronger within the space of close proximity and seeing each other in new situations. Will they find a way to make fake become very real? Or will both their trust issues be an obstacle neither can overcome?
I've been really enjoying this series centered on Westfall U students that find love. There have been glimpses of both Ryse and Paris throughout the series, so it was really good to finally get their own story. They have that kind of chemistry that only the best kind of friends have. It's very easy to understand how friends cross the lines into more when they have the ease and familiarity with each other already, compounded by attraction. Ryse and Paris were obviously already feeling more than friendly since before this story started, but their journey wasn't easy considering all their issues. I liked their story, liked them, and am really excited for the next Westfall U student to fall in love.

Un’ultima cosa: CHE SIA UN’AMICIZIA TRA DUE RAGAZZE O TRA UN RAGAZZO E UNA RAGAZZA, CIÓ CHE CONTA È IL RISPETTO, LA FIDUCIA MA SOPRATTUTTO LA SINCERITÀ IN OGNI MOMENTO
Having read other books in this series, I was immediately interested when good ol’ instagram algorithms “suggested” this book to me. Dang was this one a buzzkill.
Page after page, you can tell this book was written in haste and the overall story suffers for it. Outside of a few obvious grammatical errors (too vs to, then vs than), this book also does a poor job of building any kind of tension as Paris and Ryse fall for each other. We know they both like each other pretty much right from the start and yet we still have to slog our way thru 150+ page of them telling literally every other person mentioned in the book how much they like each other vs just being direct with the other person.
There are few literary tropes I hate more than when an entire book’s conflict hinges on the two main character’s inability to have one simple conversation with each other. The perpetual cliffhangers at the end of EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER of “everything falling apart when the truth comes out” or “needing to enjoy the moment until the truth is told” get old really, really quickly. Fool me once, I’ll read the next chapter, fool me two-thirty four chapters later - I will chuck the book (physical or e-book) across the room in frustration.
That said, once they finally have said difficult conversation the book picks up and hits all the routine rhythms and beats you’d expect from the series. Don’t get me wrong - the final conflict was pretty obvious due to some not so subtle foreshadowing at every turn. By the time you get there, its like “meh.” Basically you’re just ready for them to make up already because you know, and the author knows you know, that they will. At no point was I ever actually worried things wouldn’t work out. Which can be a good thing or a bad thing - depending on the type of book you’re looking for.
Overall, Paris and Ryse’s story could have been something really cute but it just fell really flat for me.
Ryse is a senior hockey player on the Westfall U team. He is looking at getting drafted after he's graduated with college in the spring time. Ryse is an Engineering major.
Paris is biochemistry major in her sophomore year of college, and a single mom. Paris has been hurt by her baby daddy - Tyler, and is worried about getting into a relationship with someone new. She wants to tell Ryse but at the same time she's worried about their friendship and if it will harm it.
Both Paris and Ryse have been best friends for a few years. Neither wanting to admit they have feelings for each other beyond their friendship. They don't want to mess the friendship up. Paris needs Ryse to be her fake fiancée for the new school her son is trying to get into. Ryse needs Paris to be his fake girlfriend so the puck bunnies will leave him alone and he can get better press possible to show for the NHL teams that might be scouting him. It would be a win win for both if they were together, right?
I did receive a FREE ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
Reckless Player is a fun loving friends to lovers romance with Ryse and Paris. Both of them are related to other characters from this series. I actually needed a chart with all the characters because I easily got confused with all the relationships. Paris is a single mom living next door to the hockey house and splitting her time between raising her son and going to school. Ryse is a senior hockey player who is hoping to be drafted but has had some negative articles written about his “dating” life.
Not only was this a friends to lovers romance, it was also a faking dating one. When Paris and Ryse both find themselves in situations that would be easier if they had a SO, they decide to fake it. How much can you really fake it when the underlying feelings are real? Does his relationship with Paris keep the puck bunnies from causing trouble for Ryse?
This was a very sweet romance and I enjoyed how Paris and Ryse had to acknowledge and accept their feelings for each other and figure out what it means. It was a slow burn but very worth the wait.
Paris is trying to balance school and being a single mom to her son Max. There isn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her son so when she is having trouble getting him enrolled in the school she has chosen for him she asks her best friend Ryse to pretend to be her fiancée so that it can happen.
Ryse is in his final year of college and is looking forward to a career in the NHL. The only thing standing in his way is his personal reputation so pretending to be engaged to Paris is the solution to his problem as well. Neither of them expected that the biggest challenge would be protecting their hearts.
The relationship that Ryse and Paris share is special and is much deeper than friends even though they both deny it. As they spend time together the chemistry and feelings between them ignite but it also means that is they are to have a future together they must overcome the emotional damage from their pasts.
The hockey playboy and the single mom, an unlikely pair brought together by common friends. It’s a connection that grows with a simmering chemistry. The care and affection between Ryse and Paris is evident from the start.
The underlying attraction that neither is quite brave enough to act on gets the tiny push it needs when Ryse needs to clean up his reputation to not look like a possible detriment to an NHL team. Paris needs a partner for her son’s private school application.
I was hooked on the sexy vibe between these two that’s tempered by a deep respect for each other. Paris’s son Max is adorable and balances these two out perfectly.
Westfall U is low drama sports romance with characters to love and friendships that feel like a coming home each time I read one of the books.
Don’t miss out on this heartfelt friends to lovers read.

This is my favourite book out of all the previous ones!!! Stephens did it again!!! Amazing... Ryse and Paris were best friends and Paris was a single mother. Max is the cutest.
I loved every second of this book!!! From the time Ryse found out he loves or has feelings for Paris to the time to totally accepts it!!! The growth!! Love it. Paris was always there for Max and wanted to best for him. Her relation with Ryse was hot and the chemistry the tension was just so good!!!
My babies got engaged 🥺 that part, the song they danced to. It was so much them!!!
I love the friendship between Ryse & Paris! It makes this story even better, because you know they really like each other & the chemistry grows from there. Believe me there is a ton of chemistry between these two! Plus I love how hands on Ryse was with her son.
I understood the hesitation that both of them had because neither of them had easy childhoods. Even so I really enjoyed their story. Another great addition to this series.
Omg Ryse story. We saw him in Callous Player and how protect he was with his sister Poppy. When Ryse needs to lay low and drama starts for him he goes to his best friend Paris who so happens to need a fake fiancé to help her son get into a new school. This book was to best friends a secret relationship what can go wrong. I am in love with the Westfall U Series. It's a must read.
Ryse and Poppy’s, dad slithers out in the middle of the night while their mom is at work. As if, that isn’t bad enough no he leaves them unattended for several hours in order to make his getaway. However, it wasn't a clean getaway at all. In fact, it did more harm than good. His cryptic message he left with seven-year-old Ryse has pushed him in hockey and his education. But, harmed him from ever having a meaningful relationship with a girl. One-and-done doesn't count.
‘Make sure, to do well in school. He did good in math, and science, and he thinks, Ryse has the same gift he does. Ryse needs, to use his skills, work at them, and when your old enough, don’t make the same mistakes he made. Don’t let a beautiful woman, charm him.’ Unfortunately, Ryse used that last sentence as a yardstick to relationships or nonrelationships. He became the king of one-and-done. To the point when Poppy arrives at the school two years later she’s worried about how callous he is.
Now, here he is in his final year and realizes he’s been in love with his very best friend, Paris. Yet, here are the obstacles that lay before him. One is that everyone has been warned, by Cole, ex-teammate now a pro, about not messing around with, Paris because she is, Holland’s big sister, and, Holland and Cole are together. Two, Paris just got out of a bad relationship, with her baby daddy, to her six-year-old son, Max. Three, she is in an intense program at the college, and this is his last year before, he hopefully goes pro in hockey.
When Paris needs, a fake fiance it is perfect in that, Ryse has been praying for. He has been dreaming about her, for almost a year. In truth, so has Paris, but still asking him this favor is, killing her. But, for Max, she would do anything. She needs, to get, Max into this exclusive private school because he is, miserable in public school. The school has rules, and committed relationships are a must. Max is okay with it. In fact, he is enjoying having more time, with his best buddy. But, at the same time, it worries, Paris because, Max is becoming, too attached, and maybe so is she.
The two friends have relationship hurdles, to get over. And a vindictive puck bunny wanting, to prove that she can get a second one-off, to prove that, Paris means nothing, to him. She is posting false social media pics and is killing the mood. A very good story with painful daddy issues.
Even though Ryse and Paris are broken, they are good together. I love it when there are kids in a book and Max is just a little cutie. Although the premise of the book is really good, I found some the wording awkward and at times the story seemed to go from one scene to another too fast. But the chemistry between Ryse and Paris is off the charts and the author sure can write the steam! I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Ryse doesn't trust himself to have a relationship because of his father leaving when he was a little boy. His number one rule is to only sleep with a girl once, and then move on to the next one. Paris's mother died when she was young and her father disowned her when she got pregnant in high school. When her baby daddy leaves, she has to make a better life for her and her son. With the help of an inheritance from her mother, she decides to go to Westfall U, so she can be closer to her sister. Never did she think she would become best friends with the hockey hottie next door. And she can't believe when he offers to be her fake fiancé, so that her son, Max, can get into a private school. Will their fake relationship remain fake or will it become real? If so, who will it become real for?

4 Stars for the hockey star and the single mom

Really struggled to even finish this one, but I wanted to give it a chance since it was my first book by this author. Unfortunately, it was the writing that gave me the most pause. The dialogue was so awkward, and I never connected with the characters because we aren't shown anything really in-depth. So much of the story was told in post-accounts in a paragraph or two after events happened instead of in the moment as they're happening. The connection between the characters didn't develop on the page, instead it developed off the page and we're told about the majority of it after it happens. These two are supposed to be best friends, but so little of that showed. They were awkward every time they were together, even before they decided to fake a relationship. I also don't understand the timing of their friendship because from what I gathered, they didn't know each other just a year earlier, so when and how did they even become best friends?
Honestly so much of this story happens off the page that what we got on the page was all the awkward moments between them that didn't convince that they belonged together. The drama for the third act breakup was also annoyingly predictable and overdone. And because so much of the characters' feelings were kept from the reader, I couldn't bring myself to care when one of the characters had something huge happen in their family. It was all too surface level for me to care.
The one thing I did care about? This mother deciding to enter into a fake relationship and then having her son lie about the relationship too so he could get into the school he wanted to go to. She makes a huge fuss about not letting it affect him, but just the lie itself obviously affected him even without all her wishy washy should I let him come over play games with my son anymore drama.
Reckless Player is the fourth book in the Westfall U series by R.C. Stephens. This is the sweet slow burn, friends to lovers romance between Ryse McGuire and Paris Donovan. This group of brothers, sisters and friends always provide an interesting story and it was lovely being back with the Westfall Dragons Hockey Team, past and present.
Ryse has become disillusioned with the puck bunnies and wants his best friend Paris but she is off limits because he can’t ruin their friendship. He is positive she doesn’t feel the same way. He dreams about her and it doesn’t help she has moved in next door to the hockey house he lives in. He also understands what being a single mum involves as his own mum was one bringing up him and Poppy.
Paris is a single mum to Max, studying for her science degree and is Holland’s sister. She adores Ryse but knows he is a playboy and will never settle down. He is very smart, is kind to her and helps with Max. She gets all swoony over him when he is with Max because they are so good together but isn’t ready for a relationship as still getting over Max’s dad.
Ryse is the spotlight player this year and eligible to draft but after being in the gossip column he needs to keep a low profile especially with the ladies. He has worked too hard to lose his future so must show he is dependable. His sister Poppy suggests a fake girlfriend to keep the puck bunnies away. At the same time Paris is desperately trying to get Max into a private school and they expect her to be in a stable relationship so it is a win, win situation for both of them to pretend they are engaged.
They have amazing chemistry but both have childhood insecurities which affect them. She doesn’t know any good men so finds it hard to accept Ryse wants to put his bad boy tendencies behind him. Can she put her heart on the line for a guy who’ll be leaving for the NFL. I understood Paris wants to protect herself but also her son, but I felt at times she didn’t give Ryse the chance he deserved. Ryse has his hands full trying to cope with his growing feelings for her and proving to her he is serious about their relationship. He is determined to reform his ways so he can live up to being the man she needs. It was sad when he feels he doesn’t deserves her and starts to worry that Paris and Max need more than he can offer.
It was lovely seeing everyone get together for Thanksgiving, having Wolfe and Rebel’s wedding plus the great news for another couple. This is an enjoyable story about how the things that happen when you are younger, can greatly affect your life and attitudes as you grow up. Will this couple ever admit their true feelings for each other? I had read all the previous books and knew who everyone was so felt some of the information was very repetitive, however, I am really looking forward to Broken Player #5 about the mysterious unavailable Darren, and Rebel’s sister Blossom.

(romatico)
I was both frustrated and disappointed in this book. I was looking forward to the story but so annoyed about how it played out.
Ryse and Paris were cute together. Both taking on very difficult subjects (science and engineering) I liked the beginning of the story. Ryse was needing to clean up his playboy image (even though it didn't sound like he had been sleeping around much lately...but still?) and Paris needed to look like she was in a stable relationship for Max's new school. I was onboard! But then it got frustrating.
Telling you now....Paris is fragile...only because every side character in this book will tell Ryse that, multiple times. He will also ask for advise on how to get her...multiple times...and each time the will tell him to take his time and tell her how he feels (because she is fragile). So he does...then he asks her to be his gf and she freaks out.
I love a slow burn but this book did not deliver a slow burn. More like both characters really liked/lusted after each other from the get go but both not sure if the other liked them. EVEN though they both were sure the other one did in fact like them. The whole friend group knew these two liked each, so help a bro out! Someone say something!
I loved Ryse, I thought he was so sweet, supportive and kind. Paris, on the other hand, was very frustrating. She couldn't fully trust him, even though he never did anything to break her trust.
Reckless Player: A College Hockey Romance (Westfall U Series) 🏒⛸️🥅 First, Let’s start with the ratings 📖 Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 out of 5⭐️ Spicy 🌶️.5 out of 5
Overall I thought this was a good book but it wasn’t really it for me.. I really wanted to love them but I just couldn’t get done with this book fast enough… I think the problem is sometime when authors write “best friends to lovers” it could be blaaah to me honestly and it’s definitely not my favorite trope..
The Characters were soo cute and I did like the relationship between them and Paris son Max I just wish the story line was a bit better and different..
This is the first series I read by R.C Stephens.. I was looking for another short different college hockey series that I could enjoy and it was cute but I don’t think I will continue the rest of the series it just wasn’t for me..
