This book just puts a smile on your face! Now, I know it's weird to say a book called "Man CANDY" is like good popcorn! But…
…Let me explain: reading this gives you the same feeling as when you're about to watch a new blockbuster movie. That nervous excitement as you've just purchased a bucket of popcorn, eagerly waiting for the film to start. Your hand reaches in, you slip a piece on your tongue and... it's perfect! Just hitting every spot - It's fluffy, warm, and melts in your mouth. You let out a small moan at the taste and pleasure, and it doesn't matter that you weren't hungry or that you shouldn't be eating junk. It's everything you want in that moment, and the next second you look down and you've devoured half the bucket without realizing because it is THAT GOOD!
This book is a Dual POV that follows Lindy and Dex. Lindy is a boring accountant, but has a secret - she is also a romance writer. Dex fell in love with Lindy the moment he saw her. Within the first day, he bought her a wedding ring and told Lindy's friend he was going to marry her and is now in Hunter Valley to make his dream a reality. Lindy is not interested in Dex. She believes he is just a loafer billionaire who doesn't take life seriously, and he is almost a decade younger than her and she is looking for someone long-term and Dex does not give off those vibes. She doesn't know that besides being a Billionaire by family he is also a pro hockey player and Dex wants EVERYTHING long-term with her. Stuck out on luck and love, when her writing partner suggests using Dex as a muse for her book and following the suggestion of her sister (who is dating Dex's brother) that Lindy should use him for fun - she decides to give him a chance.
What I love about this is even though this is a short read it hit that spot for me - it gave me my trope soup - which I love and squealed at when the plot unfurled and I just love how much depth was written into Lindy and Dex's insecurities. Lindy was forced to grow up too soon and she's always had to be this perfect adult, acting mother and has over time fallen into a rut. Dex teaches her that it's ok to be selfish and do what she wants - and to let loose and have a little fun. It was also cute that Lindy is everything Dex needs in a loving partner who listens and doesn't want him for his money. She sees him.
The only reason I didn't give this a full 5 stars is there was a third-act breakup and I was annoyed at the name "Dex James". Dex is tired of being objectified - he is already a very public figure and objectified by his hockey fame and what people think about him based on social media. All he wants is to not be objectified - BUT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES he was objectified by his name "Dex James" - and what his name stood for (Billionaire and All) by Lindy and the other characters. I think his full name is mentioned 36 times and it started getting annoying. It took a while for her to stop thinking he was "Dex James" and just thinking he was Dex...
I will also eat my words and say for once I did not hate a book with one character with instalove - because the story was wholesome and cute and I loved them.
Trope Soup: ▶ Dual POV ▶ Sister's Boyfriend's Brother ▶ Small Town ▶ Billionaire Romance ▶ Reverse Age Gap ▶ Good Girl ▶ One Bed ▶ Third Act Breakup 😔
Just read this series - it's fast and enjoyable and I am eating them up!
An uplifting, Naughty, fun filled, low angst book that surprised me.
Just second chapter in and I started snort-laughing at Hero Dex’s dialogues and antics. He was one of those heroes who hides their intensity and intelligence behind an easy going, goofy exterior. I loved his character so much. He was decisive where Lindy was concerned and didn’t waver from his goal-to make her his.
Bombarded with unexpected responsibilities from her early twenties Lindy was a perfectionist with reserved manners. She was also 8 years older than Dex. And together they complimented each other very well.
I loved Dex’s equation with his brothers where as I thought Lindy and Bridget needed a little more communication in their relationship. Overall a very enjoyable romance with HOT scenes and likeable characters.
Tropes: —small town romance, forces proximity, one bed. —obsessed ice hockey player hero, he falls first, dirty talking. —reverse age gap, reverse grumpy x sunshine.
Recommended.
I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
i said this about the first book in the series and it still is true for the second: these are like extended jessa kane novellas in a good way. they are insta-love, age gap, very (sometimes comically) obsessed heroes with nicknames and random spanking ok.
if you don’t like insta-love, this is not for you but if you’re looking for a very low angst, lighthearted read, these are perfect. this is reverse age gap, hockey, and billionaire and dex is OBSESSED. the way he takes care of her is so so cute.

✏️Review:
MY FAVORITE OF THE SERIES YET!
Man Candy by Vanessa Vale is Book 2 in the steamy contemporary romance series On a Manhunt, which predominantly features the band of James brothers finding love in smalltown Hunter Valley.
Before I realized this was a whole interconnected series, I accidentally skipped ahead and read Book 5, Man Scape first, and loved it so much I knew I had to backlist the entire series and read in order, which is was I’m currently doing. I read Book 1, Man Hunt before this one, so Man Candy was next up on the list!
The FMC here, Lindy, is the older sister of the FMC from Book 1. When their parents died, Lindy, in her early 20s if I remember correctly, had to become mother, father, and protector of her younger sister, forsaking a lot of her own personal desires and wants for this responsibility. Now that her younger sister Bridget seems to be in a good place in life, and has found love with a James brother of her own, Mav, Lindy feels that she can finally, at 35, make moves on her own life. Things like fully focusing on her romance writing, and finding Mr. Right; Lindy wants a husband and to start a family of her own in the near future. She made a list in her youth of all the qualities she’s looking for in Mr. Right, adding as she aged, and now all she has to do is find the man that fits it all.
Enter Dex James, hockey player, ~7 years her junior, and only in town for a limited time before returning to his career in Denver, and across the globe. He may not be her Mr. Right on paper, but could she let him be her Mr. Right Now?
You know, in all the age gap romances I’ve ever read, for some reason I had never come across a reverse age gap one, so once I read the blurb and saw that it was one of the tropes for Man Candy, I was really interested to see how it played out in this romance. I thought it was handled maturely and so, so well; the characters both acknowledged it, both were able to voice their opinions, fears, thoughts, expectations of society, and then both were able to fully convince the other, with words and action, that it was a nothing burger. It didn’t matter to them. But the matter was still discussed honestly, and not just swept under the rug. It was honestly just a well-done moment, especially considering the overall goofy and unserious tone of the series. I think it makes these weightier moments have more impact.
Although there were more serious undertones at play here, Man Candy still had that OTT energy we know and love from this series in spades, especially from the MMC. But things like jealousy in the MMC, or the MMC making choices on behalf of the FMC, where in more grittier romances can definitely and probably eventually come off as darker, this series plays these lightly, almost loving in its caricature. It’s OTT and it KNOWS it. You know it too, EVERYONE knows, so why don’t we all just have fun? That’s essentially the subliminal message I get while reading. And it’s a big ask from a book to its reader, especially if it’s objectively not a good book, but luckily that is NOT the case here. It’s entertaining fluff, but you gotta love when a book embraces that and makes it the damn best entertaining fluff it can be.
Some star points off for a third-act misunderstanding that wasn’t pulled off entirely successfully, especially because it’s one that probably could’ve been both prevented and then resolved with a conversation where both parties had enough respect to listen, which I think both characters did. So that’s why the GR rating is 4 stars, versus upped to 5.
But Lindy and Dex were such a good pairing, they worked so, so well together. Everything was on point for them, their physical chemistry, their emotional connection… I couldn’t see them with anyone but each other, and I loved that Dex was so steadfast in his devotion to Lindy, and gave her the time to catch up herself, or rather, to realize she was already there, and just had to finally believe it was her turn to be cared for, for the rest of her life. Ugh, love these two!
I highly recommend this series if you want a break from the darker, gritter, more intense contemporary romances out there. It’s a refreshing and fun series that always provides a zany hook to get you invested. Yes, they are pretty silly and a lot unserious (at times), but if you just let yourself embrace that, as the series has, I think you’ll find some big laughs and some big heart.

This is such a quick & fun read. I really enjoyed Man Hunt so I was excited to read Man Candy! I actually enjoyed Dex and Lindy’s story even more!
I was such a easy and enjoyable read and the spice was on point.
She’s an accountant and aspiring romance author and he’s a professional hockey player. He falls in love instantly and wants to make her his. She’s 35- he’s 27. 🥵
I loved man hunt so it I was WAITING for this to come out. She's a 37 year old accountant moonlighting at night as a romance author who meets her sisters bfs (book 1) brother who is a younger, hot hockey playing hottie. Shes getting older so she's looking for forever, with the white pocket fence, kids, dog etc and shes unsure of him because he's just Mr right now. As for him? Hes obsessed with her and wants to lock her down 😍😍😍😍 he bought het engagement ring after the first day of meeting her, he was so sure she was the one 😭😍😍😍😍❤
There is an emotional support toaster.
Loved this. No ow. No cheating. Just a good love story.
Vanessa vale!!!!! I luff youuuuuu!!!! I will arc for you!!!! 😂😂
*Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review*
I just don’t think this is the romance author for me.
The intensity brought in with the insta-love plots were incredibly difficult to process because I just can’t get settled with the idea of some guy bringing on pet names and obsession and overwhelming horniness and discussions of marriage with someone he isn’t even dating yet.
There’s no real character or relationship development and it’s a bit frustrating because I know I would’ve eaten these books up a few years ago! My tastes have changed and the characters, overall, feel very flat.
I’m happy to see the author move further away from the older person in this age gap romance obsessed with the youthful body of the younger person involved. The concern surrounding this age gap was a bit odd, though. Lindy freaks out over Dex being so much younger than her but Dex is pushing 30 ? Lindy is in her mid-30s. Nothing about this age gap was questionable or needed any convincing to be comfortable with. Why Lindy didn’t think Dex was at a proper age to be thinking about marriage and kids when he’s literally like 27 is beyond me and felt kind of unreasonable.
All in all, the books in this series are smutty, small town, insta-love plots that are definitely someone else’s cup of tea but not mine anymore.
CW: explicit sexual content, references to dead parents, grief, recurring (constant) negative self-talk
Sugar, I think you’re the only one who really knows who I am."
I must have not been in my right senses when I decided to read the series that Man Candy was a part of. This clearly is a 'it's not you, it's me' issue, so I'm not going to knack this too much - especially since the first one was tolerable, and there's definitely a target audience for books with this story and appeal.
Kicking off right where we left off at the end of, this is the story of Bridget's older sister, Libby, accountant by day secretly writing smutty romance fiction by night, and Maverick's brother, Dev, a much younger hotter talented hockey player, who's been smitten with Libby ever since he laid eyes on her at their respective sibling's wedding. The struggle is the glory, here, as he makes it his life's mission to prove to her that he, most certainly, is the man of her dreams, whether she wants to admit it or not. 😭
Cue in all the cliché instances where our FMC gets to witness just how great a guy he really is, both off the ice rink and in bed, while also getting her moment to shine, as she slowly realizes that not everything has to go by the book, or in her case, the list that she had fashioned for the perfect man, since she was thirteen years old. So sweet, right?? 💟💟
And yes! The amount of times our MMC addressed Libby by 'sugar' instead of by her real name, either suggested to me, that he had either clearly forgotten it, or he was putting into full emphasis the purpose of this book's title. 😂😂 Look, I really don't want to be harsh, but it was such a quick read, not really as steamy as the title and premise would suggest, that I don't want to hurt it with my own personal grievances.
The reverse age gap romance was a welcome touch, and Libby and Dev did exchanged some fun witty banter. Also, Dev's relationship with his brothers was a hoot to watch, and I liked that Libby had her own group of moral support and comfort - but, that's really just about it. And, Libby did haver her moments of personal growth, which I appreciated, and Dev showed some level of maturity in his own way, but it wasn't anything extravagant to write home about.
If you're in the mood for a fast-paced, forced proximity, insta-love, often at times quirky romance, topped off spectacularly with a Vegas wedding read, then feel free to give it a shot. Will I be checking out the next part? Yes, not that I'm curious, but there's a sucker born every minute, and in this case, that would be me. 🥺
The romance was cute enough and I loved seeing Lindy get out of her shelf but Dex got too caveman-y for me at times. Highlight was definitely the squirrel drama 🐿 Looking forward to Theo's story!
Still a guilty pleasure, but there were a lot of plot holes…
The first book in this series was all insta-love goodness. And the second book delivered a lot of the same - except it was a little all over the place.
📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Man Candy by Vanessa Vale
📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: On a Manhunt, a character series. Book 2.
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Dex took one look at Lindy and knew he was going to marry her. But she’s got her guard up, and their lives are very different. Regardless, he’s dead set on showing her he’s more than just Mr. Right Now.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Picking up these books is like actually buying the People magazine you lead through on the stands. It’s a guilty pleasure for sure… and you’re not taking it too seriously.
Dex and Lindy were still super cute. I love insta-love, and Dex had a wedding ring picked out before their first kiss. It was so very swoony.
But it was a bit all over the place. The story had some details that kept fluctuating - time apart, dates, that kind of stuff - and the hockey stuff felt forced. The conflict was also a little lame.
But I’m still moving thru the series. It’s been a fun little ride and some light reads to get me out of a funk
The second story in this series, On A Manhunt, has some funny and some “OMG, what did I just do?” moments. This is a fun, fast-paced romance that includes embarrassing moments, age-gap romance, secrets, and resolutions. I liked the characters, and I liked the integrity of Dex. I haven’t read the ‘bonus scenes’ yet, but I always look forward to them (found in her newsletter.) This story, and what looks like several more, seem to revolve around the James men of Colorado and the town of Hunter Valley in Montana.
From the moment that Dex James met Lindy Beckett, he knew she was the woman for him. She is older than him, and he doesn’t care. Age isn’t the factor, getting her to give him a chance will be the first challenge. Lindy’s life was altered by the death of their parents, and she became more of a mother to Bridget, than her older sister. Her dream of writing novels was placed on a back burner, and becoming an accountant was responsible. For years, she did what she felt was the ‘right thing’ even if it didn’t make her happy or complete. While she has written a few romance novels, it is a secret that she has kept from everyone. Letting them believe she is working after hours. Maybe it is time to let go and live the romance.
Dex may seem carefree, but he has been there for Lindy, taking on some of the burdens that have come her way. Getting her to stay in his house—and his bed—is not so easy, but he knows she is the woman for him, and his perseverance does win her over. He is never pushy and allows her to make the decision to go further. Maybe even make her beg.
Lindy: Why are you being so nice? Dex: I’m not being nice, I’m taking care of what’s mine. I want you, Lindy Beckett. Since the first time I saw you. Lindy: We…we barely know each other.
“You’ve been looking for Mr. Right. Maybe he’s right here, right now. Mr. Right Now.”
Lindy: A fling. I don’t want to be a fling. You don’t even have guest bedroom furniture. If that doesn’t say temporary, I don’t know what does. Dex: I told you in the car, I don’t want temporary with you. Lindy: What? Dex: I don’t want temporary. I want to see where this goes. Lindy: This? Where it goes? It goes nowhere. Or back to Denver. I’m thirty-five years old, Dex. I want to get married. Have kids. The picket fence. A house without holes in it. Dex: Good, because I want that too. With you.
Lindy: Am I the only one who doesn’t know who you are? Dex: Sugar, I think you’re the only one who really knows who I am.
Reporter: You must be feeling pretty lucky your girlfriend—the one we’ve all seen you with in Montana, of all places—doesn’t mind you’re an enforcer off the ice. Dex: My woman, lucky? I’m the lucky one. It’s better than the draft, being a first-round pick by someone as perfect as she is.
The story has just the right amount of angst, passion, and romance. I liked Dex and his determination to show Lindy that she is more than a woman who lives by her list and past responsibilities. He respects her and wants to be with her, and when she lets him, he shows her how passionate she truly is. Age is only a number, and what you do with your life and the people in it, is what matters. Love’s true test is being able to put yourself aside and do what you must for the person you love. Will Dex and Lindy realize before it is too late that they are perfect for each other?
Dex: I love your list. And the toaster. What are you trying to tell me? Lindy: I don’t think I can be a good romance writer until I have one of my own. Dex: A new toaster? Lindy: A romance. Our story, God, it’s the perfect romance, but it’s not finished. Dex: Oh yeah? Lindy: I want…I want a happily ever after, Dex. With you.
The audiobook was great and I can't wait to listen to the others.
I liked a lot of things about this but I also had some issues.
1- It's a reverse age gap; 2- Lindy writes romance novels on the side which i like the idea of; 3- Dex had the energy i love in romances. He is alpha and possessive and he goes after what he wants with no doubts about it; These are all things that I am here for.
Now what i didn't enjoy and that's in part because of the fact that it was brought up time and time again.
The stereotypes in this. One of them was Lindy being convinced that her books would be seen by everyone (including family) as p*rn and nothing more even though she also knew that was not the case. Another one was the fact that despite the fact that Dex told her countless times he wanted her not just for her body but because it's her, she persisted on viewing him as this playboy who just wants to f*ck her and dump her and I am sorry but that couldn't be further from the truth and it just ended up annoying me. There was also the fact that she was the only one to always bring up their age different time and time again and no one and I mean no one had a problem with it. Case in point is the couple from book 1 and the h in that is her little sister. This all together made me not really like Lindy and in the end I was in it for Dex and to see him have his hea.
I'm still interested in continue the series and I hope the next audiobook drops soon for me to continue.
Man Candy by Vanessa Vale is a sweet sweet treat of a book.. A hero who knows what he wants and does everything he can to prove not only wants but is there for the duration! Dex might be the most patient of heroes. I think what I loved most about him is that he doesn’t manipulate Lindy to get what he wants. He waits for her to see what is right in front of her face. All it took was a tree falling in on her house and some short nighties! Lindy and Dex are so hot together. Their chemistry is off the charts and story just smolders!
I so in love with this small town that Vanessa Vale is creating. I cannot wait for the next James brother to fall. Man Hunt was very insta-love this story does take place over a month. We had great characters with great banter and fantastic spice. It is a must read!
4.5 STARS This book is the second in a series of interconnected stories. I loved 𝘔𝘢𝘯 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘵 the first book and I loved this one. It’s a really quirky combination of insta-love (I’m usually not a fan, but this series is so entertaining, it just works for me), super spicy, incredibly humorous AND there is a plot with immensely likable characters. It’s a “reverse age gap” which I’m a big fan of and opposites attract romance. It’s definitely on the lighter side, I just love the tone of this book and series. It’s so amusing, charming, entertaining and sexy. Lindy is responsible, stable, generous and she’s hiding a secret second job. I love this aspect so much, it’s very fun. Dex is a talented pro hockey player who’s funny, caring and looking for someone to see who he is underneath the fame, money and great looks. He falls fast and first. The journey to win Lindy is a really steamy, sweet and hilarious experience. If you want something light that has quirk factor, that’s HOT and has a cute plot and great characters I highly recommend this book and series. I think it’s fresh and so much fun. Lindy’s sister and Dex’s brother are the characters from the first book and the guy’s other brother will feature in the upcoming book in the series. I can’t wait to read it!
this book was everything! addicting, humorous & so so hot!
this was my first vanessa vale and i’m very impressed! i loved lindy as a heroine and dex dex dex was HOT!
- roommate romance - reverse age gap - small town - hockey player - author heroine!
it was so much fun reading about a romance author! the way her and her author friend would do writing sprints like we do reading sprints! so cute. this book had me cackling and i cannot wait to read more from vanessa vale!
Oh god, the heat in this book is off the charts! I am really enjoying everything I am reading/listening to of Venessas! This book was very well written, unputdownable, full of heat, passion, action and suspense! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire book! I can't wait for the next book!
Troped: Age Gap Hockey romance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ I absolutely adored this book! Im fairly new to the sports romance genre and I’m loving it. Dex a 27 year old famous hockey player has eyes for Lindy a 35 year old accountant who write romance on the side in secrete under a pen name, Just so happens Dex is her muse. Her sister dates Dex’s brother so they were bound to meet eventually. This was a fast read and had me swooning for these brothers. Im so glad to have been apart of the ARC team and to have gotten to follow the love story between Dex and Lindy!!
Vanessa Vale's books are always ones I enjoy. I know her books aren't for everyone, but there is a simplicity to them that is just so fun and enjoyable and this one was no exception.
Dex and Lindy were complete opposites of each other and yet they worked so well together and I loved about Dex refused to not try with Lindy. He was definitely a little over the top at times, but that's part of what I love about Vale's work. I appreciate that he was always trying to give Lindy what she wanted and was always pushing her to just let go and do and be what she really wanted. the way he supported her was really great. I also appreciate where Lindy was coming from throughout the book and getting to watch her growth was great.
This was really fun read and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the following.
✔️ Reverse Age Gap (8 Years) ✔️ Forced Proximity ✔️ No Strings/Fling ✔️ Sports (Hockey) ✔️ Billionaire ✔️ Vegas Wedding ✔️ Small Town ✔️ First Person Dual POV 3🌶
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
smutty smut smut. so wild but so entertaining and did I mention smutty?
Dex literally said the minute he met Lindy that he was going to marry her. He was crazy possessive and insta lovey but actually such a sweet hero. Lindy was his opposite in every way but I really liked their relationship.
I find Vanessa’s writing very insta lovey (unrealistic) but also slow burn at the same time. It works for her and I’ve enjoyed the 2 books I’ve read from her. You pretty much read these books for the vibes and smut lmao. I’m looking forward to her next book with mindy and theo 🫶🏼
I REALLY enjoyed this dual POV, he falls first, reverse age gap, small town, only one bed, Vegas wedding, sports romance!! My first by this author but definitely not my last. While it is the second book in the series and there is some overlap from book 1 you can read this as a standalone. Great on audio too. I am excited to listen to more soon!!
This is Dex and Lindy's book. It is the reverse age gap with Lindy being the older one within the couple.
Some people say that they don't like insta-love stories. Well, I adore them. Dex noticed Lindy since Bridget's book and he knew she was the one. He just needed a little persuading. The story plot helped him perfectly. I usually don't like reverse age gap tropes, but in this case I liked Lindy so much that I totally forgot about it.
I liked the story, the characters, the love. And I will tell you one thing for sure. This book was spicy 🌶️. I mean scorching hot spicy levels 🥵🥵🥵.
There wasn't a lot of drama and Vanessa perfectly set up Theo's story in the end... Theo and Mallory 😍. I can't wait to read it.
