Dark Hearts #2

Vicious Hearts

Rate this book
I’ll do anything to save my family. Even if it means marrying the devil himself.

Cillian Kildare is a monster wrapped in charm and sophistication. A gorgeous psychopath with venom in his veins and sadism driving every beat of his cold, black heart.

When I’m sent to kill the vicious Irish mafia boss to settle a debt from my past, it’s supposed to be simple.

It becomes a lot less simple when Cillian catches me, and carves his way into my darkest secrets and most deviant desires.

Now, captured and bound as his prisoner plaything, he has new plans for me: an unholy marriage of inconvenience.

He’ll protect me from my past. And for six months, I’ll give him my body, my soul, and my submission—willing or otherwise.

It’s just physical. A contract and nothing more.

But the devil, as they say, is in the details.

And if I’m not careful, this devil might soon break his way into something else:

My heart.

Vicious Hearts is a standalone dark mafia, arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers age-gap romance with a smart, untamable heroine, and an ultra possessive literal psychopath of a hero with “look at her and I’ll unalive you” energy. This is a DARK romance with adult themes. Readers are strongly advised to read the TW inside. No cliffhanger; HEA included..

A reader first and foremost, Jagger Cole cut his romance writing teeth penning various fan-fiction stories years ago. After deciding to hang up his writing boots, Jagger worked in advertising pretending to be Don Draper. It worked enough to convince a woman way out of his league to marry him, though, which is a total win.

Wasn’t really holding my interest. But that could also be because I feel like I’m hardcore slumping and I don’t know what reading feels like anymore. 🥲

So glad I deviated from my TBR for this. This couple was so intense! I knew I’d like Cillian after reading book 1.

Una is the daughter of his greatest enemy and that enemy may be dead but the damage he continues to inflict is NOT. This book begins with Una being sent to end Cillian but she’s about to bite off much more than she can handle. And be much better off for it! Eventually...

Can't wait for Hades romance next!

To be honest I will say I did not expect Cillian's book to be so dark - there was something kind and endearing about him in ''Deviant Hearts''. The way he loved his nieces and how protective he was of them despite being in the type of world and family they lived in.

I also did not feel such a strong connection to the MCs in this book then I did in the previous one, I think Una and Cillian did match perfectly to one another, there was not much of an emotional connection I felt throughout the book. It might just be me obviously and I do believe they love each other but emotionally I think these two have a long way to go. They are both dark minded and both possess a certain thought process others would not understand so they have that going for them.

The whole plot surrounded around someone named ''Apostle'' and their mission to kill the ones who killed Seamus (the villain from book 1) who also happens to be Una's father.

You see Una and her twin brother Finn were subjected to his demented ways for years as children and they were forced into the mental ideology he had. When he was imprisoned they were placed in the foster system and suffered greatly both emotionally and sexually. Sadly, her brother Finn, who seemed to be one who took most of the pain (by choice to protect his sister) developed a drug addiction to take it all away and she has been searching for him for 2 years.

Apostle has been keeping her brother hostage until she can fulfill the tasks laid out to her: Task number 1 is to kill Cillian.

She attempts to do so and ends up at a BDSM club Cillian frequents and that meeting where she loses her virginity to him does not go as Cillian might have hoped as she stabs him right after.

Because of whom Seamus was to the Irish mafia and how he was caught years prior - the Irish mafia members are weary about Cillian and his authority so he does something archaic and demands Una marry him (since Seamus was once a part of the Irish mafia) in order to end the war and bring peace the way Neve's marriage did.

Sadly we find out her brother died 18 months ago from a drug overdose and this means that Apostle never had her brother, it was all a ploy to fuck with her and control her.
Now - did I know who the apostle was from the moment we were introduced to Dr. Thompson? Yes. It was so obvious and sadly it did not have the same effect on me as intended.

I kept thinking how stupid everyone was to not see the obvious connection, especially Una. She just embraced the lady and trusted her.

Dr. Thompson aka Gail was in love and obsessed with Seamus, enough to marry him while he was in prison, DIG UP HIS CORPSE and place it into her home and live with it too.

Crazy has a new meaning.

Sadly this book was disappointing. I was really excited but the smut wasn‘t my cup of tea. The whole submission thing was too much for me and sometimes kinda embarrassing. I skipped a lot of pages.
I liked Cillian and Una and the story had potential but for me the smut was a No-Go (together with the dirty talk and submission thing). But this is totally my opinion, I think there are many people out there who will absolutely LOVE this book.

It wasn't a bad read but it also wasn't really what the blurb lead me to believe it would be either. Instead of an enemies to lovers, forced marriage, spicy sex slave romp which I was very much in the mood for it was more of a C grade thriller with a lot of family tree filler and pretty boring sex. Also my pet peeve is when bad guys spend all their inner monologue telling you how bad and dark they are. Like we get it, you love killing people my dude but can we chit chat about it a little less??

Una as an assassin who also matched Cillian's darkness was also pretty underwhelming and instead of a badass h we got a looooot of trauma dumping.

I think this book would be fine if you're looking for more of a thriller type mafia than a character/relationship driven romance which is what I thought I was getting.

An absolute, enthralling, intense story! This series is getting better and better. I've always had a soft spot for broken, damaged and misfits characters, and in this respect, the author delivers all these elements in spades with these two main characters. This is a fast-paced and well-crafted story with scorching HOT kink galore throughout the book. Cillian and Una's unusual blisteringly steamy connection will have you second guessing yourself until the very end. Love all the members of the Kildare and Drakos families and I can hardly wait to see what's next and to discover Hades' story. Overall rating: 4.5 stars!

⚠Be warned if you have triggers to read the intro/TW first as it jumps almost right into dark content.

thank you valentine pr and literary management for this arc! this book will release on may 4th, 2023.

i want to start by saying that vicious hearts and definitely NOT for the faint of heart. check the triggers of this book before diving into this world! this is book 2 in the dark hearts series and i absolutely ATE UP deviant hearts. dark, steamy, and veryy twisted: book 2 definitely did not disappoint. book 1 really gave us a good look at cillian and his dark and disturbed nature, but we definitely get more of that in this book. cillian is a psychopath, but he would also burn the whole world down for his family. i found this book to be so redeeming for his character and i absolutely loved that. una is a dark and damaged character but also has grown from her struggles and become very strong because of them. she’s sassy and definitely gives as good as she gets, especially from cillian. it was really cool to see this two dark and disturbed characters come together and complement each other, both in relationship and in chemistry. the spice (🥵), the tension, and the suspense were all so perfect that i enjoyed reading this book so much. i cannot wait for hades’ story!

** ARC REVIEW **
Before I dig into the review let me just say that before reading this book I downloaded Book 1, Deviant Hearts, and read it. They’re both standalones but when they’re interconnected characters I always love reading in order. I would definitely recommend reading Ares & Neve’s story before diving into Cillian & Una’s.

Cillian is the head of the Kildare Family and quite literally a psychopath! Una is the daughter of a monster, one who wanted the Kildare family dead. She’s set with the task of killing Cillian and let’s just say she’s as drawn to him as he is to her. Cillian is 🥵 , since Book 1 I was obsessed with his character and I couldn’t wait to read his story (& it definitely did not disappoint!).

Jagger Cole is a new author me but I will definitely be reading more from him! (🖤He’s actually the FIRST male author I’ve read spicy books from🖤) If you’re looking for a dark mafia romance with a plot and amazing characters, then you’ll definitely want to pick up this series! AND HADES (ARES BROTHER) IS NEXT AND HE IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE!! I’ll anxiously be waiting for that book.

Worth it and you should read this!!!

Contains some spoilers so please read at your own risk

This book was so amazing. I loved Cillian and Una's story. The banter and bickering between them was comical and hot at the same time. It was sweet how two broken people finally found their other half and somehow fixed the brokenness inside them.

I appreciate the family dynamics in this book too. How they were so protective of each other and the lengths they will go through to keep their family out of harm's way. I did get why some people from Cillian's side were wary of Una but at times I'm annoyed with their rudeness. But I'm glad that it was resolved and they patch things up for the betterment of their new found family.

It broke my heart reading the awful things done to Una and her twin brother Finn. They've experienced so much horrors all throughout their lives and I can only imagine the difficulty living with the trauma and demons from all those horrible events. I loved the glimpses I read from the flashbacks about their sibling relationship, and how they protect each other with the best they've got against any harm since they were young up to the point they had to separate. Although, I'm sad for what happened to Finn, I guess he couldn't set the demons at bay any longer. But in an alternate universe I would've wished for a different ending for him, he deserves to experience life, see so many things, or travel the world, and so much more.

As for Cillian, he was so unashamed of what he is or how he does things, something I truly admire about him. He was definitely a morally grey character, yet I rooted for him anyway. I won't tolerate in real life the way how he handle the monsters inside him, but in this book? I'll support him 110%, those guys deserve what Cillian unleashed upon them, they had it coming and I'm not even appalled by his questionable ways. But what I did commend the most was how he hunted down the person responsible for the abuse that Una suffered when she was young. The way he made sure the jackass will surely suffer was over the top pleasing for my own taste and I got a kick out of reading that scene. I guess nothing's more sweeter than a morally grey character who's willing to unalive someone for the woman he loves 😅

I supposed it was safe to say that the characters in this book have their own brand of craziness, but nothing will ever top more than the villain in this story. She was batshit-insane-total-lunatic hands down. I went slacked-jaw reading the last chapters of her attempt to bring back her most loved person. I knew something was up with her when she was mentioned in the book, but I still didn't see that twist coming. I only saw those insane plots in movies or dramas, but reading it just gave me the same icky feeling. I guess love sometimes can be really maddening driving some up to the point they do unthinkable things.

Overall, this is worth recommending. I truly enjoyed this book and it exceeded my expectations so much. This book deserves a high rating and positive reviews. Finding this entirely gratifying wasn't something new, I'm always amazed that as much as I can say, I do try savour Mr. Cole's book with one sitting, they are that good. He's one of my go to authors when it comes to mafia romance, and I'm really glad I stumbled upon one of his books last year.

I can't stress this enough, but people should read this! No time will be wasted with Cillian and Una's story, so worth it.

First Impressions
Vicious Hearts is the second in the “Dark Hearts” series and I found this installment to be quite interesting. After the first book, I was really curious about Cillian’s book and after seeing a raving review of this one from “The Book Refuge” I was highly intrigued by it especially as it features a psychopath of a hero and an assassin heroine. Even though this setup doesn’t always work out for me, I was still curious about it and I really fell hard for this world in the first book and I was fascinated to see where the author would take this one, especially in seeing a male author portraying their take on a dark romance. While its not a perfect read, it’s a delightfully entertaining one. If you are a fan of mafia romance, then I highly recommend it.

First Line
To Kill monsters, you have to know the darkness.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Cillian
Cillian is the head of Irish mafia, and the head of his family. He has psychopathic tendencies and will protect his family at ALL costs. He is an alpha male, highly possessive, and dominant in and out of the bedroom.

The Heroine: Una
An assassin in training, her father is the enemy of the Kildare’s and tried to kill Cillian and his niece. She is determined to save one she loves, even if that means going into the lion’s den to kill her target.

Summary
Una, is being blackmailed, in order to save her twin brother’s life. She would do anything for her brother no matter what. They were trained as kids to be assassins, even though they thought that they had escaped that life, the darkness is now ready to consume her again. And the target that she is given is Cillian, the head of the Irish mafia. What she doesn’t expect is that while on the mission to assassinate Cillian, they form a sexual connection to each other and something deeper forms between them. Even though Cillian is furious, there is something holding him back from killing his prey, he instead wants to discover all of her secrets and own her body and soul. They enter into an agreement of marriage of convenience and it will throw their families off but their relationship forms something more tangible and we see what a love match between a mafia psychopath and a assassin would look like…

What I Loved
Vicious Hearts is an action packed romance that definitely delivers on all fronts. I absolutely had so much fun with this story and most especially these characters. Unlike the first book, this has a whole different type of enemies to lovers element to it. Its apparent that this is what the author prefers to write as the whole series seems to be enemies to lovers, but this one really seemed to work for me. And man their dynamic is so fiery hot. So be prepared for plenty of hot scenes and some BDSM elements. From their first meeting though, chemistry is explosive. I really enjoyed how Jagger Cole writes the more sexual scenes. Definitely knows how to write well done spice. While these scenes are super hot, there is also something more building within the scenes themselves and I found myself being impressed with the careful buildup of this quality within the sexual moments.

The tension between them that is outside of their sexual relationship, makes so much sense. In the first book, we see how evil Una’s father is and in this one we see another side of evil to him that not even his own children were protected from and in fact received it worse as he manipulated them in the worst of ways and because of how they were treated as kids, they both suffered as they matured. The last element to this story that I expected was to see a marriage of convenience but honestly it ended up working even if Cillian’s family wasn’t completely supportive of it. It made sense that they would come to this agreement with each other.

What really made this couple really work for me in the end though was seeing how they each had darkness they had to battle. There are black in each of their hearts, and neither of their individual upbringings were positive and both carry deep scars and this is where a marriage and even a emotional intimacy between them really makes sense. They understand each other in a way that they could never be understood by those closest to them. I really admired the way in which Jagger Cole was able to build upon this element and when these two fight for each other…its pretty kick ass!

And the ENDING….we have to talk about this ending haha This is what made me a Cillian stan forever! This hero is WILD and crazy especially when those he loves is in danger. And what he is willing to do to protect them, well he literally is a psychopath and the manner in which he goes about it was hilarious, and intense. He gets creative and has to battle the villain in only the ways this villain can be battled with dark intent and crazy maneuverings. But it works and his family remained safe. Poor God of War is all I am going to say haha

What I Struggled With
Now this is NOT a perfect book. I wish it was, but this author just hasn’t reached five star status for me. Now these books aren’t bad or anything. In fact I absolutely have a crazy fun time with them. But there was just something missing to keep it from getting a higher rating. Its really long and I do wish that there was a bit more softer intimate moments between our couple. Even in a super angsty read I still need those vulnerable moments between a couple, and only saw a fraction of it.

Overall View
Vicious Hearts is a powerfully engaging read that will keep you in tenderhooks from beginning to end. It’s a tale of darkness, of the forbidden and of connecting two dark damaged souls that when brought together is a force of nature.

Favorite Quote(s)
“This might all be for show,” he growls, his hand cupping my cheek as the other arm circles my back. “And you might have fucking stabbed me, and there might be an expiration date to all this.” I tremble as green fire ignites behind his eyes. “But I will never let anything or anyone hurt you.”

“I might be broken, Una….” The words rasp in my ear as I lose myself in him, feeling him utterly take control, claiming every part of me. “But I’ve never felt more fixed than when I’m with you.”

Two black hearts. Two broken black pieces, glued back together with gold.

She makes the chaos in my head…” I shrug. “Slightly less chaotic. That thing in me—the violence. It’s quieter with her.

It means I want to find the dark, black, parts of you and rip them out,” I rasp. “It means I want to expose those needs you have that you’re so ashamed of that you keep them hidden away, and inflict them upon you until you’re mine.

Steam/Spice Explanations

Simmering cup of tea---soft warm touches and light intimacy
Warmin' by the fire- a medium level of sexual tension, a balance of sexual and emotional intimacy, lighter on the details in the sexual moments.
Steamin' up the room -the sexual content is more explicit in the language and tone, heavier amount of sexual scenes.
Blazing fire to the building-The prime focus is the sex scenes, scorching hot, and could burn one. Less focus on the emotional intimacy to the relationship.

JUST WOW. 🤯🔥
This book was so good. From the story to the spice to the dark side of Cillain, I LOVED IT. 🖤

Cillian is head of the Irish Mafia. He has a dark side that his family knows about, but an even darker side he keeps contained. One night, he finds himself in an unfortunate situation when a pretty woman tries to kill him. When she fails, Cillian does all he can to find her. He finds Una and learns that she is the daughter of a horrible monster who tried to kill and torture his niece. Una is doing what she needs to do in order to determine her twin brother’s safety. When Cillian takes Una, he ends up having to marry her in order to tie the bonds amongst the other Irish clans. While they are together, they learn they both have a dark side. They like the pain and the pleasure it causes them. But what happens when a past comes back to haunt them?

This book was so good. Cillian & Una’s relationship would be considered unconventional, but they worked so well together. They brought the darkness out in one another and channeled it into both pleasure and love. Cillian is the ultimate Dom and feeds off of Una’s pain, which she in turn loves as well. But even with their dark sides, you can’t help but see the true love they have for another. 🥵

I love this series and can’t wait to continue with Hades book! 🔥

Favorite Quotes:
“He knows what I crave. And I love that he knows. Just as I love that he knows I don’t want a PG, Disney version of aggressive or hard. I want it vicious.”

“Two broken pieces, fitting together perfectly. Two black, bruised hearts, beating together as one.”

Deviant Hearts was good, but this was fan-fucking-tastic. I got that Cillian was a psycho when we were first introduced to him in Neve's story, but didn't understand the levels. Straight up fucking awesome 🔥🔪. I loved how Una and Cillian connected with each other and there was a perfect amount of steam and swoon. I'm also very glad to have read this in order with the overarching storyline. I will definitely be continuing this series.

Star Rating : 4.5 / 5 Stars

POV : Dual

Cliffhanger : None

Hero : Cillian

Heroine : Una

Pace of the story : Moderate

Angst Rating : 5/10

Heat Rating : 6/10

Triggers Involved : past Trauma , Dub Con, twisted hero

Plot Summary :
Cillian Kildare is every bit of the monster the world accuses him of being. He is the terror , the horror and now the one person Una has to marry. But she has no choice. For her brother, and the very reason she has survived this world , she will have to marry that monster.

Except , Cillian is not what she expected him to be. He is a monster but there is more. There are secrets he is hiding. And the worst thing is that he does not know her secret. A secret that might just make her the biggest enemy he ever had.

Overall Opinion :
Cillian is here! I have been wanting this man's book ever since he made an appearance in Oliver's book I think. I am not sure lmao but yeah , I have been wanting his book so bad. The darkness he has , the love for his family in a twisted but sweet way , always told me that his own love story would be a blast .

I was all over this book as soon as it landed on my Kindle. The way the story unfolds is amazing. Jagger always somehow surprises me with his plots and the way he gives us a new storyline every-time. The ending is amazing and now I am even more crazy for the next book!! I hope it is for the man I am wanting it to be!

Definitely recommending this one to all the dark romance loving people out there!

I have eagerly awaited the story of Cillian Kildare, a dark avenging angel, and Una O'Conor, an innocent and fierce temptress.

It took me a few chapters to warm up to Cillian's harsh and punishing love, but eventually, his tenderness shines through. Jagger Cole did an excellent job demonstrating how Una's presence in Cillian's life transforms him and silences his inner demons. Cillian, in turn, becomes Una's unexpected protector, providing her with a safety net to fall upon, and helping her flourish and face her own demons. Together, these broken individuals find peace and solace in each other's chaotic souls. Their tale delves into complex topics but is handled well, with a satisfying resolution for these characters.

If you're in the mood for an intense dark mafia romance featuring unhinged protagonists who fight as hard as they love, I highly recommend picking up Vicious Hearts by Jagger Cole.

Dual POV - Cillian and Una
Standalone

Tropes: dark mafia, enemies to lovers, villainous hero, age gap, marriage contract, found family, "hurt her and I'll unalive you" vibes

I enjoyed this one way more than the first book. The dialogues were much better in this one, specially the mmc - less exclamations marks and all that yk.

The only thing missing was the emotional connection between the MCs. They were saying ilys and I was like 'huh? When did this happen?'. Also, fmc calling mmc 'sir' during smexy scene is not my jam.
